Was looking for info and reviews on the Thule Backup Box and Easybase combo and came across this on the internet - Thule 684 Terrapin. Can't find any uk stockists though? Anyone know why? Looks a great alternative as the main prob with the Backup seems to be it's limiting of access to the rear of the car. No such issues with the Terrapin! Check out the vids on YouTube. Hope someone has info. Cheers.

I've had a look at these tow-ball loading cargo containers and to me they look as though they could radically affect the handling of the vehicle if anything of substance is loaded. They act as a lever between the back axle and the front wheels, taking the weight off the steering  If I had to use them I would only put items which are lightweight in them.

So we're still none the wiser on the lack of UK stockists? I'll mail Thule direct I think. Will post up any response if peeps are interested.

They dont seem to be for towballs, they are for US type recievers, hence not stocked for Europe.

Hi,

American towbars tend to be square tube with the tow hook sliding into the towbar and pinned/bolted into place. If you have a towbar with a bolt on tow eye then it would be easy to make a bracket to fit the Terrapin which would simply bolt on in place of the tow eye.
I too would be a tad apprehensive of carrying too much in the box as I feel it would lighten the steering too much.

This got me thinking and I am sure you could modify a bike carrier (towball mounted) to mount a box on and thus increase your storage, sorry it is the engineer in me.

And failing that there is always this http://www.thule.com/en-GB/GB/Products/CargoCarriers/Boxes/Thule%20BackUp%20900.aspx

Regards

Bob

You might fall foul of type approval laws ,and it would stick out further than it should.
