We went through the same thought process, and ended up with really big, thick single square bags with plenty of insulation. Warm and comfortable ... not the smallest pask size in the world though.

We have mummy bags and they turn with us. I usually pull the drawstring in quite tight. I sometimes get in a bit of a muddle, but I'm usually fine.
Our bags have a smooth / shiny lining, and we use cotton liners (the red one of which STILL BLEEDS EVERYWHERE EVERY TIME WE WASH IT, EVEN AFTER 8 YEARS - sorry, I just had to get that off my chest.)
