Last year the zip for our bedroom compartment came away from the fabric and has now left a small rip of around 3" long. At the time there appeared to be a lot of horizontal tension across the doors to the bedroom compartment and I suspect the rip occured when someone tripped over one of the guide ropes.
I suspect this was down to bad pitching with the floor of the tent having been pulled too tight horizontally. I'm considering purchasing the footprint for the tent to ensure its pitched more evenally.
Do you think this would this help? What's the best way to repair the rip on the bedroom compartment?
I've used Lancashire Sports Repairs a couple of times and they do great work. Proper repairs that make it good as new. LSR started up when the real Karrimor closed down and they got a lot of knowledge and experience from that factory.
It's my understanding that it's on the fabric part of the inner isn't it? If so just sew it up yourself paying special attention to the two ends of the rip. If it looks bad get a light coloured piece of fabric and do a patch over it.
If you're having bother straightening out a tent a footprint will help you, but you can use a piece of tarp cut to the correct size if you don't want to pay the excessive price for essentially the same thing.
Early last year on our first trip we also suffered from the same type of tear in our Tigris 400, this was also done by some idiot tripping over the guy ropes, and I must admit that the inner sleeping compartment has always been a bit of a tight/stretch fit with little or no room for any “give” all.
As there are only 2 of us and we have never used it, this is when the white dividing material came into use, my wife just cut a piece out and machined it over the tear, it’s now as good as news.
She then went one step further and sewed some extra 2” lengths of elastic on to all the toggles, the inner tent now has a lot more “give” in it, we had no more problems the rest of last year.
We would also not be without our footprint. So much easier to pitch the tent correctly, also keeps the bottom of the tent clean.
Thanks everyone. Yes it is the fabric part of the tent so I'll get the needle and thread to it in that case.
Alsie42: That's interesting. I wonder if this is a common issue with the Tigris range? Either way, I think we'll invest in the footprint to at least ensure the tent is getting pitched correctly.
No, I don’t think that you have to worry that there is a fault with the Tigris range, my daughter has an Outwell tent and she has just converted it like her mother has done with ours due to the fact that her Pod was also a “snug” fit.
I think you will find that most tent manufacturers like to make tents look good and pleasing to the eye, that seems to entail stretching the inner pod to look nice, they would be nothing saleable about a “saggy” displayed inner tent, they don’t appear to have the practical side in mind.
I also think that due to the recent popularity in camping many thousands of tents are now made and sourced from places like China, Like most mass produced goods sometimes overall Quality can suffer at times, on saying that I have still been highly please with my Tigris, it ticks all the right boxes for us, and even more so now with my wife’s modification.
