Regarding travel, from what has been posted so far it might be best to do a 'car shuffle' so that cars do not have to be left parked by roadsides and so that there is at least one car where we camp in case of emergency.

A word to the wise - having done a few lightweight camps with groups; one thing is sure if a car is taken to the site (with its accompanying luxuries) it will be used. To get to the chippy, for the extra blanket or bottle of scotch. For those who have lugged their gear and made the most of what they have carried it can be most dispiriting to find that one of the party is not singing from the same hymnsheet and even if the benefits are shared the experience will not be a back pack adventure.

Far better to meet at a pub or cafe and then walk together to your site sharing the navigation and attendant trials and experiences. So much more to chat about when you set up camp.

Wild camping particularly with a group in that area is not really practical as finding a useable piece of ground near a pub for the evening is practically impossible (delighted to be proved wrong).

A pub close by and facilities to shelter from the weather
together will make all the difference should you be unfortunate enough to get some bad weather.

Just trying to work out how long it would take to get down by public transport, would make it a better adventure than taking the car. Assuming I'm invited that is

The only place I thought of positioning a couple of cars was at the end of the walk - by which time it will be a case of throwing stuff in and driving back

Hadn't planned on any en route, so no danger of them being abused (might as well throw the backpack in and forget it otherwise)

I am happy to park at the end of the trail, and ferry a few back to the parked cars

It just means we can do a different part of the walk, rather than retracing our steps

Wild camping was never on the cards, a campsite is fine (I did randomally camp along the wye though when i did chepstow to hay and it was lovely!)

And yes there is loads of accommodation at Symonds Yat if it comes to the worst

PS: Of course you are invited! I'll stick you on the list!

Symonds Yat Backpacking for beginners!

Since the preding post here in the 'Camper under canvas' forum, the Symonds Yat adventure has taken on a life of its own - the other thread in the 'Meeting up' forum now runs to twenty pages and has had over 4,000 views!

A few of us are thinking of doing a short non-camping 'test hike' with loaded backpacks to see how we get on. So I have posted an illustrated guide to the walk we are planning to do in the 'Other outdoor activities' forum.
