We (family of 4) have a Gelert Mayon 6 tunnel with a daft little Outwell sun shade thing sticking out the front.
I am wondering whether we should invest in an actual front or side extension, preferably with a zip up end. Sadly the only one which might fit are blue and the tent's green!
We have also taken a day tent thing recently to sit in, when it invariably rains, as we camp with friends. However, quite a few sites don't allow them, SO will a front/side extension improve the quality of my camping experience??!
We managed all last year in our 5 berth tent (3 of us) but by the end of the season had decided to get the front canopy. It's open at the front but will be great to have the kitchen in there and also means we have somewhere to BBQ in the rain.

Likewise we camp with friends and yeah the problem arises when we still want to gather and chat when it rains, very thankfully, two sets of friends have the Outwell Ohio extension which is huge and we've had well over a dozen in there at any one time!
This way we don't interfere with their inner tent (only slippers on the carpet!)and we can gather for a drink and something to eat, such as jam and cream scones one rainy Saturday afternoon last year!
Although it's friends with the extension I believe they wouldn't be without it.
They are great for your kitchen area and you can hang wet towels under it, knowing if it does rain during the day they won't get wet. Also handy for muddy shoes, as they are outside but undercover, so no issues if it rains overnight.
Saying that our Outwell Oakland extension failed in high wind when the guy rope stitching came undone, thankfully a friendly camping neighbour tied it to the tent to stop it flapping about. We had to pack it away after that and really missed it - it's now fixed properly so we'll test it again this year.
We bought a front extension to our Nevada M and dispensed with the day tent. I've even at one site attached a tarp to the extension to give us a great undercover party area!
Some other benefits - as it's attached to the tent, sites that don't allow gazebo's, etc allow them and at no extra cost. The pack is lighter and smaller to pack than the day tent, and quicker to put up.
I WANT A EXTENSION FOR MY HARTFORD XL BUT CANT FIND ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!
i really really want a extension for my tent but because it is the older style hartford i cant get one anywhere, if anyone has any deas i would really appriciate them.
Definitely life enhancing when the rain is pouring down but not into your tent when you open the door (when door is sloping, as per our Utah, pics here)
I'd say the extension (as opposed to the open ended canopy) is an ESSENTIAL - brilliant when it's raining and really makes the tent a usable space. But be warned, all canopies and extensions need to come down when the wind gets up. If you go out for the day and you know it's forecast to be stormy, you're better taking it down before you go.
Gelert make a side extension for the Horizon and its green and its got a door might be worth checking it out size wise. Coleman also make one I believe
I would advise both, side extension and front awning. The open front extensions are a pain ith it rains.
You can never have enough space, especially with two children. You just need to allow for extra setup time and extra space in the car required to squeeze it all in!
We bought the porchextension with our tent as looking at reviews on here, there's an issue with rain coming in the door otherwise. The extension we've got can be used as a porch or a canopy as the front zips off if required. We've not used it yet, but when we do it will be the kitchen area - we'll have our cooker/igloo down one side and a table for food prep with food storage boxes down the other side.
It will be good having somewhere to hang wet coats and put muddy boots if nothing else!

Leesdna - I have the older style Hartford L and I bought the new Hartford extension for it last year. The new extension does fit and clips onto the poles of the porch on my old Hartford. The only difficulty was the fact the tent does not have external poles onto which the end of the canopy fits. I fixed this by attaching guy ropes onto the clips and I guy it down at the back. There is a picture of my tent with the new Hartford extension on my homepage. Look on my profile.
we have the front extension for our Nevada M and wouldn't be without it. Great for the camp kitchen and shoe storage. Like many others have said before, it really helps keep the inside of the tent clean too. Didn't have too many problems with rain coming in the open front either. Definitely a positive!
