Bob - sounds like you were ripped off there! Really though, I wouldn't call the area ultra expensive .
On the river is obviously pricier, but there are loads of great pubs around doing decent food and great beers at pretty standard pub prices. Saying that, the area does have a bit of a restaurant reputation so, yes, you can spend a small fortune as well if you really want to.
BTW, were you camping on the island in the middle of the river? Is that part of the Hurley Riverside site?

Yeah, thanks for trying Bob
I guess you have not been to Hackney or West Drayton, not exactly what you would be ideally looking for from a campsite.....
So , do you feel sorry for me now
I used to live in Hackney in Stoke Newington - & the thought of actually camping in Hackney is just unbelievable!
I live in Kent Dozy, and there are some nice sites in West Kent & East Sussex that you could probably reach in a couple of hours via the M25, even on a Friday night.

Hurley Riverside was quite nice...a couple of teething problems on arrival with rabbit holes and recently cut thorn hedge trimmings on the pitches but once that was sorted I had a good time.
There were two pubs in Hurley. One was a hotel and certainly run like a London wine bar...even the barmen apologised for the prices. The other was a bit run down but did good beer at proper prices. It also did food but strangely the locals were ordering food from a Chinese Takeaway
I believe the campsite on the island in the middle of the river is run by Hurley Lock...probably under the Environment Agency. I don't think it belongs to Hurley Riverside. It is only accessible by foot or boat I believe...no cars.

I know there's a decent free carpark really close to the bridge to the islands on the south side so you could park there if your gear wasn't too heavy. I've seen some pretty big tents pitched up on the island - don't know if I'd want to lug our Wolf Lake over though

You should move down here to the Midlands. We really miss being so far from the coast. Cleethorpes and Brid' are almost exotic. Come and camp at Clent hills!
