Thanks, what lovely replies.

Scep, I meant do I have to have a real canvas tent, not that some of us might be pretend campers.

I'd love a canvas tent, but just plain can't afford it even if they do last longer. We've always camped. We've camped together since we were 17 and both had camped before that.

Anyway, I'm glad all tent campers are welcome! It's really nice in here!

liz i am the owner of 3 canvas tents, and i didnt pay more than £100-00 for any of them off an auction site........ however i always follow the price of canvas and they are quite expensive at the mo even on said auction site........... we also have a vango orchy which is great for a quick pitch and we recently sold an outwell montanna 6 as my children dont come with us anymore and we foind it to big for our needs............... it doesnt matter what tent you have as long as its a tent

A tent is like a newborn born baby..... to some they all look the same..... but if its yours it's beautiful.

Which tent you have and what it is made of is a matter of personal perferance.   Also everybody's need are different.    I find that when it is just the kids and me, we can manage with a much smaller set up, then if my useless husband comes.
A family with kids will probably need a far bigger tent than a couple on a walking holiday.     Having started off in what was classed as a four man tent, after one very wet weekend, with two small kids and a bad tempered husband we bought a far bigger frame tent - that is when I fell in love with canvas over nylon, but saying that still have a nylon tent for if the kdis and I are going on a weekend break.

I dislike SIGS, apart from inthe bedroom section, and that is more to do with keeping the bedding dry than anything else.       In the main living area I like grass.

If you sleep in a field under a sheet of material held up with a few poles and connected to the ground with pegs..................That is Camping.

It doesnt matter a hoot what material your tent is made of. Just because some prefer canvas and some dont, if you enjoy the whole ethos of being out there and doing it - thats what its all about.

As my sig says - Its not about what you have - its how you use it. You can only stay in one tent at a time!

People tend to forget that sometimes - including me!!

Cool campers use Delta Pegs.

We have a polyester and a polycotton. The PC get's used for the longer trips and the other one for week-ends and the like.

The PC is definitely better for us though. (obviously no use if you back pack!) It's more sturdy, quieter ie it does not flap about in the wind and I just prefer the look of it to be honest.

When I posted before on this thread, I did mean that 'camping under canvas' meant camping, as I said originaly 'camping is camping'. Thank you to pjh10 for pointing out that I did say I WAS JOKING. (must stop doing that) I read the original post as meaning a section for those solely using a natural cotton/canvas material, and not nylon fabrics. So perhaps I should have typed 'post away what ever tent fabric you are using. I totally agree that both types of fabric can and should be used for tenting, my twenty man nylon tent would be no good for a back packer, and my gortex bivi would be no good for a family of four. So there has to be a veriety of fabrics designs and sizes. Horses for courses. Although I love cotton/canvas, I have more nylon tents than cotton/canvas ones, and I use what ever is the best for the camping trip I'm going on. Yes, I got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning.

-------------
Canvas tent, paraffin light, petrol stove. Heaven
I'd rather be kayaking.
Spent up, not pent up, just had my new tent up.
