We have booked Isle of Wight for late July/August, but I haven't yet booked the ferry. I want to book with Wightlink so I can use tesco vouchers. At the moment we have £90 worth of vouchers, total ferry will be £148.20. I would like to wait until the next set of tesco vouchers come out before booking (April I think), to try and pay as little 'real money' as possible!

Does anyone know if the price of the ferries rises closer to Summer? Or do the ferries get booked up early in peak season, and would I be better to book now (and use next set of vouchers for something else!).

Thanks in advance for your help

play around with the times that you enter... the price changes quite dramatically

the ferries do start to get booked up.. but there is normally always a few sailings available

if you do go early morning please bare in mind that the 5am sailings are classed as 'dangerous goods' sailings.. IF there are any lorries that turn up that are carrying dangerous goods, you will not be able to sail. not sure that they advertise this.. its not an everyday occurance.. but if lorries turn up at other times of the day,. they will make them wait till the 5am

if you are really stuck to times then i would reccomend booking as soon as you can

also try looking at red funnel... although you cant use tesco vouchers, they tend to be cheaper anyway, and if you can use vouchers elsewhere you could save money that way

where on the island are you staying?

and mike.... when are you coming to island.. are you doing meet at roebecks?>?

Hi, we booked the ferry for IOW for mid june, went through red funnel alot cheaper than wightlink, in fact when we checked on the internet then rechecked again the following day the fare had increased by £60 for the same sailing as been quoted previously.

We used Tesco vouchers last year for this crossing - our holiday was in mid-July and I'm sure we only booked during June as I remember being slightly worried the tickets (or whatever they sent us) would arrive before we left.

We travelled at 10 in the am and back about 7 in the evening (but if I remember I was told it was quite flexible ie if we missed a ferry, they would just put us on the next and rarely did they not fit you on)

ok to put a bit of perspective....

my OH took the youngest to the mainland last weekend.. he was booked on the 1030am sailing from EAST COWES to SOUTHAMPTON with red funnel

they were turning unbooked cars away as there was no room on the ferry

if you had missed the one before.. you wouldnt be getting on that one either

that was the last friday of the half term coming OFF the island

so i would recommend that you book as soon as you can

Mike,
I'm going to the same meet. I booked with the campsite direct and they took care of the ferry booking for me. Paid #123.00 in total which is camping for a week from 28th May and return ferry from red funnel which I didn't think was a bad price. Just car, no trailer. We sail from Southampton to Cowes at 9am on 28th and return on the 4.30pm ferry on the 4th.

Hi,

Weve just recently booked our ferry using the vouchers and as others have said it might be worth taking an earlier or later departure or location to reduce the cost - we are going on a 9am from Lymington and returning at 9pm for £105 including a trailer at the same time of year as youselves, We ordered the vouchers on a sat and they arrived with us a week later, phoned and booked and we didnt actually need to quote the reference number this time but had to send them special delivery ( or something like that!) within a couple of days. Its a difficult one, but if you can get the cost down by changing times or going from Lymington then book asap. HTH!

have a great time, suzee

Margo + Jerry that price is less than just my ferry cost, think its £138 because of how long the outfit is and times i want to travel, ive got £65 in vochers, i could knock the sailings down with times to about £80 if i go early but id pay the extra so i dont get moaned at all the way to lymington.

We booked a couple of weeks ago to go at Easter.

Booking with tesco vouchers would have been £120 because you have to take the saver fare. The supersaver fare was only £81.

This means its not worth using tesco vouchers unless there isn't anything else you would spend them on.

Thanks to all for replies. Sorry for taking so long to come back on, haven't been able to get to computer.

Yes I have pfaffed around with times, but barring getting very early ferry/very late ferry (which we don't want to do) have come down to 4.30/5.00 pm ferry to IOW and midday on Sunday for return.

Red Funnel is not much cheaper for same times - only a few pounds. And supersaver fares are not available that time of year unless you want to go REALLY early or late (and we don't!)

I know what everyone means about the cost - we did Dover to Dunkerque (return) in August last year for about £65!

We are staying at Beaper farm - and I am really looking forward to the holiday! (I haven't ever been to the IOW before - checking out the geology bits I need to be sure to see when I get there!)
