Something else that just occurred to me. When our boys first started camping I slept in one pod with youngest son and hubby slept in another pod with our eldest. That way we were there if they woke up. OK its not very romantic for parents but it can be quite scary in a tent in the middle of the night for small children. We are thinking about taking a pup tent for the boys this summer so things have moved on a bit!

Our first tent wasa small viz a vix four man,  We started off putting the kids in one pos and Richard and I went in the other.   I ended up sleeping in with the kids as they were both small so I could squash in.   Next tent we got, we got one with a bedroom that the four of us could sleep in comfortably.   It was far easier than crawing across a tent at 2am.

Well, that's what I enjoy about camping. At one with nature in the peace of the countryside...the rustle of the leaves, pitter patter of raindrops on canvas, birds singing, cows mooing, lambs bleating, kids screaming...

Our little one was 16 months old when we first took him camping and I was worried about him disturbing other campers, but I need not have worried as he was out like a light with all the fresh air and activity, plus we were all in the same sleep pod and he was reassured by our close proximity.

I had more of an issue with him waking at 7am and having a rather loud chat with us!!

I think most people are reasonable when it comes to crying children and appreciate you are doing all you can. Also if you chat with your fellow campers they are likely to be more forgiving. As for the "tutter" brigade I am sure that they will continue to find other things to complain about with life the universe and everything in their half empty glass world!!!

Our kids are grown so we avoid wee ones if at all possible, but going camping we expect kids to cry, it's normal, yeah sure I think "oh please go to sleep" but it certainly wouldn't make me annoyed or anything. We're going to become grandparents early in June and our daughter is already planning a camping trip with baby in tow before summers out! We'll just go somewhere local and park one of the cars as near to the entrance as we can so if someone has to leave with the baby we disturb as few folk as possible!

So longs parents attempt to settle their wee ones I have no issue with it, I also kinda feel that if your wee one is going to cry for hours every night then maybe camping is not for them at that time.

Back to the original question.... I think there are going to be a whole variety of reactions. Some accepting, some barely tolerant, and a few "just shut the brat up". The mix will depend on the site, so aim for a family oriented site which should give you a level of understanding..

I can't say it's ever bothered me, I sort of revel in the fact that it's not me having to get up and soothe the baby, those days have long gone.

We did have one summer holiday camp where the children in the next tent were up early, and we could hear a tv or video quietly playing, that didn't disturb us but the father constantly shouting shush did!

Like others have said its a fact of life children cry, we have a 7 and 3 year old and my wife and i sleep with a child each its not romantic but its safer and also if one of them wakes up then at least we can try settle them straight away, whoever tutted at you should be extremely disgusted with themselves not only is your child a toddler but it could of be poorly they cry for different reasons and at the end of the day you apologised !!  how many people stay up till 1, 2, 3AM drinking and being rowdy you dont get apologis from them,

book your holiday and enjoy yourselves,

if its in the middle of the night you should be asleep and not notice if its in the early morning you should be awake and getting up to enjoy the best time of day !

I often say to folk who complain about cockerels Cows and sheep at sites or in the next field. if they are awake then its time you lazy sods got up also!

children cry and play its what makes life worth while and what its all about. those who seek a quiet sedate caravan and camp site should book according we always stop for a while and view a site before setting up. cant stop those who come later but can choose to start. first thing I put up after the Awning is the wet suits on body boards and other childrens things and then the sign has been put out if you dont wish to be near children stay away.   it can go against as the ones with children at times use it as a marker. but I have no problem with telling them to behave "please"  you would be amazed how many have never had a stranger tell them not to do a thing, all part of the we must not get involved society its become.

the good old days was best. stocks, children up chimney, and scolds bridal.   ahh those was the days.

Children / Babies Crying, Dogs Barking is natural.

What is annoying is been awoken in the middle of the night by the sound of babies crying & dogs barking - and the parents / owners making no attempt to calm the child or resolve dog barking.

Just mentioned this thread to my hubby and he said do you remember those people we camped next to once and their airbeds? Basically this family decided at about 11pm every evening that their airbeds needed blowing up a bit more and used a really noisy pump, which seemed to go on for ever.

This is the crux of it really. Those people had no thought for anyone else, they could have blown their airbeds up earlier in the day, or taken a footpump like us. I would rather sleep next to a crying youngster than people who dont seem to care about the noise they are making.

There was a large tent a couple of spaces down from us which had two sets of couples, one set in their late twenties, the other their parents.

We were asleep, and a big row started up at around midnight,  (drink was partly to blame) the younger man was swearing loudly, said he was leaving and  threatened 'DIVORCE'  so loud the whole camp must have heard, and stomped off all down the long gravel driveway, we heard him dissapear into the distance. We just started to drift off to sleep again when we heard his footsteps (and his moaning/swearing) getting closer, we realised he was walking down the lane on the outside of the camp which was right behind our tent, (again on gravel)  his footsteps faded away and we wondered where he was off to at that time of night in the middle of nowhere.

Next morning, we walked by and he was sat outside their tent, looking a bit sad (must have come back with his tail between his legs,) we nodded a  'MORNING' with big grins on our faces.

So don't worry about children, adults are more amusing.
