We're taking our 2 year old camping this Fri for a week and are a bit concerned with her waking up early as it starts to get light!

Has anyone any ideas on what we could do? I was thinking of blackout material drapped over her sleeping area or dying her inner tent black... which maybe a bit drastic!!

Anyone help?!

The only way i can think of is to buy some blackout curtain lining and drape. safetypin that around the outside of her sleeping area.

Most curtain fabric shops sell it by the metre, one of the cheapest places i have found is Dunhelm if they have a branch near to you.

Kevin, I think my daughter would rip that off within a minute    Cheers for the idea though.

Romany, will have a check and see where my nearest Dunelm is. Thanks

Was thinking the very same.  Great idea for adults though - I have one very similar for myself but it often seems pointless using while camping as my 3 year old wakes up at the crack of dawn!!

As a cheap suggestion you could try weed barrier from gardening shops.

Sold on rolls it's a thin lightweight black material that has tiny holes so there will be no problem with ventilation.  I've used it many times for blackout especially at Halloween.

Focus DIY sell a 20mtr roll for less than £15.

Never had this as a problem with our three. With all the extra exercise and fresh air they have all slept like logs, even on really cold nights. Suggest you see how well she sleeps before making any changes.

We always ended up going to bed early and getting up early when the kids were small. I never found a way of getting them to sleep later and once they were awake they needed to be entertained or they would wake up the whole campsite.

I often used to take them for a shower before anyone else was up and get the benefit of the first use of the shower block, then back for an early breakfast.

Last year camping with my brothers family and 2 year old niece she was asking to come in our tent at 7.30am - had to let her in or she would have made a right racket. Hubby was delighted to be woken up with her bouncing on his head, bless him.

We always find our son 4, sleeps longer then us. All the later nights, exercise, fresh air just wears him out. Last time we went on the last day he fell asleep at 4.30pm while I was cooking dinner and didnt wake up until 8am the next morning!!

Agree with this. 2 of my 3 are what you'd call none sleepers who can happily survive on 3 or 4 hours sleep a night at home.
We've had all sorts of help and support for it, but even at 13 the middle son still has very little sleep.
The good news is that when we camp he sleeps like an angel. All the fresh air and running about wears him out. We don't have EHU so the torches we use are not bright enough to keep him awake once the evening comes along. And even if he does wake in the morning he is too snuggly in the sleeping bag to want to get up and run about.
We do find it harder if we have noisy neighbours though so we try and camp in quiter areas.

Our 3 year old slept longer in the darkened inner tent of the Kampa Bude 4 last year than in the cream inners of our Vango Columbia, so darkening does seem to work for us - not that we are going to darken the Columbia's inner...

Some people have colour died their inner tents....

Love our set-up and need no more tents or gear, so trying to stop looking!

Thanks all for the help and suggestions. Think I will play it by ear then and see how she does. Like you all say, the fresh air and running around should work!!.

I happen to have some unused weed control membrane in the shed which I shall take along just in case.
