Price matched a Coleman Northstar lantern at Go Outdoors today and got £9 off the price but did not realise that they add the postage and packing to the other stores price before subtracting 10%!! Last year I price matched a Montana front awning and an Outback grill and got £50 and £12 off respectively! No mention of p&p! Is this a new thing? Go were selling the lantern for £53.99ish and Winfields for £44. I ended up paying £44.95. Wish I'd gone to Winfields now! At least they have genuine reductions!
Never heard of that before. Not much of a bargain then

But why would the overall price include postage and packing? I wouldn't order online from Winfields of Haslingden, I would go to the store. Similarly, I am not buying online from Go Outdoors so don't know why they compare the online price to their store price??? I think the moral of the story is... make sure that whatever you price check is free delivery?? Or shop with other retailers?? I constantly scour the internet for cheaper prices than Go and find loads of cheaper retailers. JR Leisure have lots of cheaper prices e.g. they have been selling the new Bear Lake 6 much cheaper than Go.
On the subject of the lantern, have just tried it in my Hartford extension in the garden and it's brilliant! High lumens for reading and a more subtle light for just chilling - plus lots of heat. It will be interesting to see how long the canister lasts???
i think the postage only applies if the purchase would need to be delivered, so if you lived in bristol and the price was x and you compared with x then you wouldnt pay postage, if you compared with nottingham and the price was x you would pay that plus postgage. ( I have had this debate with them before)
Had bought a coleman double air bed at Go Outdoors for 31.50 then saw it on blacks website for 27.99. printed off details, they tried to say that postage was charged on blacks unless you ordered a certain amount (100 i think). However I stuck to my guns and said that I could collect air bed from blacks store without having to pay postage. He referred it to manager who agreed to refund 10%. Not a lot but it is the principle.
I’m very sorry to hear about your recent visit to Wigan GO Outdoors and the issue with our price match policy. The price promise has always included delivery charge against websites. However, if the website has a store local to our branch then we drop the postage charge as you could quite easily call at that store. This must have been overlooked on this occasion or there could be a slight training issue with the till operator. You should not have been charged postage on your last price match. Next time you pass the store please call in and ask to speak with one of the duty managers who will be happy to refund the difference and to apologize provide you with a £10 Gift voucher for any inconvenience caused.
Once again, I’m sorry for the confusion with your last visit and hopefully your next price match will be more successful.
Yours Sincerely
John Harold

So I was right, but the till operator actually said to me, I will go and ask the manager, returning and saying she was right so I think she was taking the p**s actually - I have replied that I think their training issue is more than slight!
Seems reasonable to me, if you compare with a local shop they will price match without postage. If you need to mail order then its the total cost, again sounds reasonable to me. I have always found go outdoors to be a very fair.
It is true... Go Outdoors do have excellent customer service. After the email from the store, I returned to the Wigan store. They reduced the price by another £10 and gave me a £10 voucher! So I got the Northstar lantern for £35 and a voucher for £10.
Unfortunately, I also had to return the lantern for replacement coz it's feet were broken! No problem as they gave me another. I wish I'd checked it in the shop as the one they gave me had no handle. So I had to go back again today... Anyway, I used it as an excuse to visit the new Manchester store and it was worth the extra drive. It's a fabulous store and in the heart of Ancoats - with good parking. My third Northstar seems OK - it could be described as a heater as well as a lamp
I want to thank the OP for posting this thread, before it I had no idea they price matched + offered 10% off.
Today I've just price matched a Bear Lake 6 carpet RRP 89.99, Taunton Leisure have it for 72.50 with free del and I've just ordered it from Go for £65.25 - result.

When price matching Go Outdoors add any P&P charges that the other seller has,but also add their own P&P charges (£4.95 I think).
So as an example
Shop A...£30 + £4.95 P&P = £34.95
Go Outdoors £35 + £4.95 P&P = £39.95
Go Outdoors will match the total of the other seller and knock a further 10% off
So......£34.95 - 10% means Go Outdoors will charge you £31.46
Hope that helped
Phil
The alternative - and one that will keep the independent camping retailer afloat this year is just to ask them if they'll knock £3.50 off their price, and explain why. Much less trouble!
