We also do this at Whitsun now to try to avoid the weekend rush!, We did book earlier one year and the difference it made was really noticeable ( I mean in the sense that all the "unsavoury" folk disappeared on the Monday after a rather unsettled weekend), We now book from the Monday and go home on the Sunday
Unfortunately , like a lot of people on UKCS, we are tied by school and work commitments, We don't really like taking the little'un out of school and TBH regretted it the year we did take him out for a week as there were no other kids for him to play with...We felt SOOO guilty
We both work in retail and so Bank holidays CAN be quite busy .... sometimes! so more often than not, we have to work.
We then accrue our lieu days and take an extra weeks camping at February half term...yaaayyy!
I normally avoid camping during BHs and school holidays as I am not too keen on critters and ankle biters, sorry!
However, when I changed job a year ago, I went from having 27d+ holidays to only 20d per year.
Hence I need to maximise camping opportunities by going away during BH weekends to save on holiday entitlement.
I tend to travel before and after the BH weekends though as I do not like sitting in traffic jams.

Over 10 years later since my post above, I still prefer not to go camping during BH and school holidays, except for the Easter weekend.
I went to a small adult-only site for the very first time last week, booked in January 2021, and thoroughly enjoyed my stay; and may do so again next August at a different adult-only site.

It is usually only people with kids at school who have to go camping during the school holidays so they are the authors of their own misfortunes
Even when I was working I didn't have to go on holiday during the busy periods because that was when most of my colleagues wanted to go...so I kindly gave up my summer holiday so they could book those weeks. Yes, I know...such a thoughtful, nice guy that I am

Same for me Bob once our kids no longer came with us on holiday. I deliberately worked every bank holiday I could, as I got time-&-a-half plus a day off to take when I chose, and bank holidays were often an easy shift with very few commuters on the trains making us run late.
Now we are retired there is only one place for us during every school holiday and bank holiday, and that's at home. If the weather's nice I can relax in the back garden, and it's very quiet around here unless someone decides to get their strimmer out!
I don't go camping during school holidays as so many kids now ( not every kid, just lots! ) are unruly, the parents often are no better.
The parents go camping to give themselves a break from the kids and hence the kids love not having rules / discipline and so enjoy their freedom.
To the expense of campers that wasn't to go camping to experience nature and just hear the rustling of the leaves in the trees, not screaming children ( when did the thing happen that children have to shout and scream while playing? - it wasn't like this when I was little, we talked and didn't shout ).
So going camping in summer now for those of us that like quiet camping requires to choose sites carefully, avoiding certain types of sites that attract families looking for a certain kind of holiday.
Baffles me why the OP thinks their strategy would ruffle feathers. Personally I have chosen to work part-time over a weekend so we can go away during the week. Off tonight for a overnighter. I'd only usually go away for weekends now for an event or backpacking with my mates who work Mon-Fri.

Being able NOT to go camping on the Bank Holidays or in August generally, is one of the great advantages of retirement.
There are benefits to getting older
Given where we live I try not to even leave the house on a BH weekend!

There are indeed benefits to retirement at least.
We live in an area that I call "Hertfordshire's Lake District". The big difference is that most people don't even know it exists. The Lea Valley is only a stone's-throw from London at its southern end and is in countryside at the northern end where we live. Loads of lakes around here, and several within walking distance of our house. Don't tell anyone though or we'll be plagued with tourists.
