Preparation that is well worth the time it takes (and that's not that long to be honest).
As above I subscribe to the pull out broken spring with pliers, push remaining section down pole with screwdriver then fit new spring, school of thought.
Shame I never discovered the tool when I used to have frame tents. I used to fit the new springs entirely by which was always a little bit fiddly.
Always have a supply of springs (and the button springs as well), pegging rubbers, gaffer tape and tenacious tape in your box of spares.
