If it is windy it will be good chance to see if your outwell oakland xl can withstand the claimed force 9 it states in the brochure. I am interested as the outwell oakland xl is the tent we maybe purchasing in the not too distant future

Yes, and don't forget to take photos as it flies across the fields with all your belongings inside...haven't had a good laugh in ages

Bob!!

We were at a tent display the other day,it was a bit breezy, the fibreglass poled tents were flapping about but the steel poled tents didnt budge...I would risk windy weather in my tents with steel poles but not fibreglass..good pegs and correct pitching should be ok,we have just bought the outwell carolina..think I would camp in that in any weather!

As an aside, I was in west Somerset and north Devon a week or so back and it was breezy weather generally. I had a couple of tents in the car and on one of the afternoons I pitched my ageing cheap'n'cheerful supermarket dome tent. As the evening drew in the wind got up, eventually to approx Force 5, and the tent got pretty lively and noisy. I put out supplementary guys, moved the car into a windbreak position, but the poles still flexed a lot and the fly whipped and crackled all night. The noise meant I slept fitfully but the tent was fine in the morning.

However, I'm taking one of my more robust tents when I go up Snowdon in a week or so.

Lol...the newer Carolina M has been slightly modified from my Carolina 3 in that the tips of the end poles are now placed into cups fixed to the main poles. I think this should make the tent even more rigid and stable.

The tips of the poles on the Carolina 3 are fitted into a cup stuck on the end of an adjustable strap which means that they do flex quite a bit in windy weather. I have not tested the tent in really bad weather yet.

Bob,when you do pitch in bad weather...don't forget to take pic of your tent flying across the site

Can't wait to take the carolina away, have waited a long time to get one! After reading the posts about large flying outwells recently am a bit more cautious about our Utah although we have had no problems with it so far

Re: Delta's, our pitch was pretty rocky so you may need rock pegs (they sell them on the onsite shop 10 for £7). Although several other pitches I saw them using the standard wire type apparently without problem so maybe I was unlucky (or doing it wrong, managed to bend several pegs!)

Well we survived, we had wind, rain, thunder & lightning followed by sun shine. The Oakland was unflapable compared to a few neighbours with flexi poles on their vango's. Fortunatly we took a few of rock pegs but still broke a few plastic ones, the shop had run out. A few people had very bent wire pegs sticking out, would definatly advise replacing all pegs with rock pegs.
So sorry to dissapoint but the oakland stayed upright and was rock solid so no videos or pictures of it rolling away.

Oh and yes ratty going to do a review in a bit, brew 1st

Glad it went well! I really fancied a trip to Rivendale this year but it was all booked up for the weekend I needed.

Windy conditions are the ones that scare me - although with more reason with my Icarus. Last year I attempted to pitch my Toulouse in bad winds and nearly scared myself to death - or at least to giving up and going home - must have been close to damage but it survived intact. And the sun shone on us eventually! A couple of tents around us did not do so well...

After my advice to go for it - WE DID, we also had all the different weather elements, rain, hail, thunder, lightening sun and most of all WIND !!!!  Glad to say that the Gelert Horizon 6 stood up well - so glad we went and now ready to book for Eskdale - hope I'll be able to report the same from Scarborough in a couple of weeks
