We've got a pretty simple gas BBQ that we take camping with us. It comes with lava rocks but they go cold pretty quickly when the gas is turned off so we leave the gas on which I think gives a strange taste to the food.
Has anyone tried putting real charcoal in a gas BBQ and turning the gas off when ready to cook? or if not does anyone have any suggestions as to whether it would work or not??
It would be a pretty messy job everytime you used it, just like with a regular BBQ. I think I read somewhere that lumpwood and other charcoal fuels work better when heated up slowly rather than 'superheated' with a constant source. I do stand to be corrected on that but it would still be a mucky job. Are there alternatives to lava rocks nowadays or are they the only game in town for gas barbies ?

I had one of those Royal gas BBQ but I found that not only did the lava rocks cool down quickly, it also flared up at the slightest hint of sausage fat. It got so bad that it nearly burned my cook tent so I threw it in the bin and I now use a gas double burner with a hotplate griddle which sits over a burner. It gives far better control over the cooking but the downside I suppose is that its not "proper" bbq food (i.e. burnt to a cinder on the outside and raw in the middle hahaha)
The Royal BBQ looks very similar to the one I purchased about 5 years ago from The Range. It was on £14 then - inflation! I also found it did not give an even heat so what I did was add more lava rocks to create a greater mass that would radiate or absorb the heat reduces the flareups and cold spots. It seems to work better now.

Youre supposed to leave the gas on to cook with-- the lava rocks are there to dissapate some of the heat, and look a bit better.
There are hickory chips that you soak in water and then let them dry out 'til they're just damp. Just sprinkle them on the lava rocks and they give a nice smoked flavour to whatever you're cooking.

cant get away with gas bbq so i use instant light bags on a £6 bbq from b&m tastes of camping . but can see a gas one would be handy for the morning grill up.
