I have been busily lurking trying to find a suitable tent for myself (single mum) and my 2 boys (2 & 4) - ie solo to put it up!!
I have camped through my youth, but not for a few years.
I am in love with the idea of a canvas pyramid - Relum Izmir type of tent looks ideal....but not much to be had in my budget (around £100-£150).
I have seen Marktplaats mentioned by some other Dutch tent fanatics and wondered if anyone could advise me on how to best use it, couriers, protocol etc.
I am having not much luck with ebay, preloved, gumtree etc at the moment!
Any advice would be gratefully received, many thanks x
have a look at These They will be having more stock in soon of smaller pyramid tents which would be ideal for the three of you. look out for the Djakarta which should be back in stock in the next couple of weeks.
I doubt very much if you will find anything on maarktplaats in your price range although it does happen occasionaly. The problem you will find is that with canvas being heavy the shipping price for anything over 30kgs is very expensive.
I think as rochford says the biggest issue may well be the likely courier costs of getting a tent back. However, if you can increase your budget slightly to cover this or maybe cover the cost of a trip over to get the tent then I think you can still get some real bargains.
Here is a De Waard Zilvermeuw for sale. De Waard dont make this tent any more but it should be fine for you and this one looks in really good condition and has only been used for 20 weeks. Bidding starts at EU125 which is a real bargain. One other advantage is that this buyer takes paypal - not all do. If you were interested you could email them in English - most Dutch people speak excellent English. You could use google translate but be careful as it doesnt always come out right.
Somewhere in this (massive) thread is an excellent guide to the terms and abbreviations used - if nothing else it is a great thread to read
keep an eye out on e-bay. I was lucky to get my Relum Izmir last year with a £25 'buy it now' bid
There's a cabanon pyramide 4 with sun canopy on at the moment with a start price of £150 and no bids so far. I'm having trouble posting a link but search for "cabanon pyramid".
If I was selling a tent on ebay for £100-£150 I wouldn't bother to deal with overseas buyers & I guess it would be the same for Dutch sellers. Unless you are going there on holiday anyway & can pick up, say a Karsten in good nick for £500 then it ain't worth it. Generally no bargains in Holland, prices are realistic.
I wouldn't advise buying a tent even for £100-£150 without seeing it. If you are buying one off ebay you need to pick it up yourself & check that the condition is 'as described', if it ain't you don't have to buy it. Your best bet for a canvas tent is off ebay, travelling distance from where you live.
There is a small relum Izmir on ebay at the moment - 3 hours to go and bidding is at £50. Would go for it myself if I had the spare cash this month! Relum

This wasn't my experience. Almost all the Dutch sellers I spoke to when I bought my tent were happy to deal with me as a UK buyer. One or two would only sell if I collected but they didn't mind selling to a uk buyer.

Agreed. In an ideal world you would collect the tent so you can check the canvas and make sure all is ok. However, if you can't get there, and you were interested in a DeWaard you could ask someone on the DeWaard forum to go and look for you.
No need to look on Markplaats someone is selling a De WaardAlbatros on the free ads. I know it's over budget but they are well worth the money if it's in good condition and at least you can go and see it first.
