I have tent insurance along with all camping equipment away from home up to £3000 covered against Fire,Theft and accidental damage. got it as an add on to my house insurance, cost about £10 extra per year so thought it was worth it.

Like all insurance, it's a legalised scam, when I checked with my home insurance, which covered camping kit, the detail was so flaky not to be trusted.

So next whilst a free member of the C&CC my tent was insured through them, again when I quizzed them, as to what I what get, in the event of total loss of my tent, they could not give me a definative answer, apart from market value, so definatley not old for new.

I decided in the end, that £50 premium, to cover some 2k's worth of kit, was not worth the paper it was written on, as in the event of total loss, I would be lucky to get a tenth of the value back.

As always, the devil is in the detail, in my view if you say somthing is worth 2k, and the insurers agree, then in the event of total loss, they should pay you out 2k, but in reality they don't.

I won't bother insuring again, untill I find a firm, that agree, if my 2k's worth of kit, becomes a total loss, then they will pay me 2k to replace said kit.

But I doubt I would get such cover for £50 per year, the problem is many folk are paying £50 per year for cover, thinking the are covered and having peace of mind, when in reality they will be lucky to get more than a couple of years premiums back, when they come to make a claim for total loss.

As always get it all in writing, and double check the small print.

Francais i guess you have not found the right insurer then, see my earlier post, fully covered new for old, the £3000 cover i have also covers the trailer should it be stolen from a campsite if it is fitted with a suitable wheel lock.

We thought our camping kit was fully covered with our house insurance until we needed to claim. We returned from a very wet camping trip and put the tent up in the garden to dry when and a branch fell on the tent and ripped a large hole in the roof. When we went to claim we were then told that in fact our insurance did not cover away from home (why would just cover this at home?) when we explained it was up in the garden the did agree to pay out although we did receive another call checking why it was up in the garden. We were paid to replace the tent minus our excess £50. We had to provide the receipt from when it was first purchased and 3 quotes, these were sent off they then called to say they had got a cheaper quote online so would only pay that but we also then went back to P J camping who we purchased it from and thy priced matched the on line quote so we did get a new tent. We are going to purchase tent insurance the year.

Our tent wasn't covered even though we had content cover away from the home. Their get out clause was they don't cover contents away from the home for storm damage !

Best to contact your insurer and get it in writing that you are covered for x, y and z.

I baulked at insurance as the premium was nearly as much as the tent itself and with a £50 excess, reckoned I was better off without it.

I know when we have CCC insurance it also covered you for alternative accomodation e.t.c. if your tent was ruined whilst your on holiday so it didn't just cover the loss of the tent and equipment.
