I'm very glad people are finding this useful Having watched the conditions this week I would add a revision to my original scale (but I can't edit it now) - taking into account a comment elsewhere that alarm bells should be ringing past about 25mph:-
5 Fresh breeze 2938 km/h 1824 mph
Branches of a moderate size move. Small trees in leaf begin to sway. Wind bulges around poles, slight flexing of fibreglass poles. Ensure guy ropes are taut. Take down any loose canopies or tarps. Bring in any furniture. Use car as windbreak if appropriate. If tent is in exposed spot, consider moving to a more sheltered place if possible. Stay within easy reach of the campsite in case winds increase further.
6 Strong breeze 3949 km/h 2530 mph
Large branches in motion. Whistling heard in overhead wires. Umbrella use becomes difficult. Empty plastic garbage cans tip over. Significant flapping and wind bulging of flysheet. Fibreglass poles flex by several inches in sustained gusts. Take down any tent extensions, utility tents etc. Frequently check guylines are taut and pegs remain in the ground. If in exposed spot, make preparations to take tent down if needed. If in sheltered spot, stay within easy reach of tent just in case.
