This thread has interested me from a sociological perspective more than the topic itself! My take so for is that there is a continum of stance from rules/regulations focussed to laissez faire. Either way my thoughts are that however you choose to behave, you should take responsibility for it and its effects on others.

When family camping I have used trailer tents, canvas and I'm soon to get a new polycotton. I have always cooked inside and taken appropriate safety precautions. When I camp alone I use a silnylon ultralight tent which would go up in second if lit but I still cook with a mini trangia in the porch and take care. If it did go up, it only contains me and I would take responsibility for it.

I feel that society in general is risk averse and whilst this may aviod some accidents, it also limits positive experiences too. I'm more weighted to positive risk taking where the risk have been identified but are being actively managed(not eliminated as this frequently means avioding said activity).
