Well said Doozers!
After all, three years isn't old for a tent, I'm very happy sitting outside my second hand slightly distressed ten year old Cabanon Pyramid which I would not swap for some oversized plastic bag. I'm looking at the view rather than the tent.....

That's what my OH says " He's happy to sit outside with a slightly distressed old bag " !!
------------- Why yearn for tomorrow when you can have chocolate today.
As I've recently had to explain to my family, any REAL camper has more than one tent.
Ideally they should be different sizes or styles, so one can be your weekend/short break/local trip tent & the other can be your long distance/big holiday etc etc tent.
Once that's bought the rest follow on easier, I'm just about to bid on my third now!
(Please don't tell my mum!) (my brother & sister-in-law are both members of this forum)
Sell your old tent. There is no point in having 2 tents the same size. Is there? Then buy the tent you want. You can say it's an early birthday/Christmas present to yourself.

LewLincs - i could leave my 'new' beauty pitched at shamba for you to see!
There you go then - buy it for Father's Day - if it's from the kids he'll have to act delighted even if he isn't lol!!!
What date in August do you go to Shamba? We're there the last Saturday for a week, can't wait! It will be our last trip this year as hubby's run out of leave

2013
March - Pooley Bridge (Pod booked!)
May - Spiers House, Pickering
June - La Garangeoire, Vendee, France
Aug - The Cotswolds?
I am more and more content with being divorced and solo...
On the other hand it puts some stress on my credit card (3 bigger tents now, and the small festival ones), when nobody's there to stop me...

My Wife has a away with buying things, there is a special language. I'm not sure how I "buy" beer but she "invests" in new clothes. She recently showed me her new shoes which were such a good bargain that she thought she would show me whilst only wearing the new lingerie she was able to buy with the savings on the shoes.
Go on and on and on and on and on and on and on about it he'll soon give in lol Failing that as the others have said withhold his treats or just go get it for Fathers day!

My OH went spare over a small £20 tent carpet for the Vango Kairos 400 that he thought we didn't need and I'm the one bringing in the main pennies (he's a fabulous home Dad). He reluctantly accepted the tent itself as I got it for £57 new, its very quick to pitch yet has standup luxury, and gave it him as a prezzie for touring with the vintage Landrover which he wants to do this year.
I certainly think tents involving substantial pennies need to be a joint decision. Otherwise if anything isn't quite right or something goes wrong, you'll get it thrown back at you, even in an argument that isn't camping related. Unless they really fall in love with the tent, any use of the tent is likely to be tainted too.
May be settle for a compromise and agree to get one at the end of the season when prices may be more affordable (there tends to be little variation on Kampa tent prices) or if you do see a good price, discuss the advantages of buying it at that price now whilst stocks are still around, and saving it for next seaon. If you can get him to see the tent in person and feel part of the decision, you'll do much better... Once you've got it then the decision to use it this year may actually come naturally.
------------- Love our set-up and need no more tents or gear, so trying to stop looking!
Or you could use the old blame game, first you say - "You must have packed our tent away while it was damp" excuse. The next line being "Now I'll need to buy a new tent as there's no way we're (refer to nookie in a tent thread) with all that mould around".
Im a terrible terrible excuse for a man sometimes.
