We only do family camping in the South of France during July for a fortnight, so for us it's a 1000 mile drive to the campsite, and we take a good 2.5 days to get there, which means 3 weeks of holiday leave gets used up.

Fact is getting there and back, cost the same, and takes the same amount of time up, no matter how long we are at the main campsite for.

For us it depends on where our speedway team is riding. We've travelled five hours up to Glasgow for a two night stay a few times. Never less than two hours away.

We've just got back from France, it's a 6 hr (ish) drive for us to Dover, and then it was approx 7/8 hrs drive in France to get to our site. However, we broke the journey up with an overnight stay in an Etap in France both ways which made it much more manageable...you just need to plan your journey so you don't arrive at the campsite too late to pitch up.

We had a fantastic holiday, yes the journey was long, but well worth it!

Lucky you living so near the Lakes, I love it there and we're hoping to do at least a long weekend there next year (hubby has no more A/L left this year aside from when we go the New Forest unfortunately!)

for a weekend 2 hours i would say , not bothered for a week or more but for long journeys we prefer to travel at night (always have ) so we dont have to do as many toilet/nappy/feeding stops with the 3 kids .
