After much to-ing and fro-ing, OH and I finally identified a spell at the start of July when we can both get a couple of weeks off work and go camping.

Booked the leave on Monday, got home on Tuesday to find a letter from the hospital calling me in for surgery on 24 June, to have the arm I broke 18 months ago (hopefully) sorted out. This will mean 5-6 weeks in plaster again.

I refuse to go away in school holidays because everywhere is so packed, and by the time they're over the days are drawing in, which I'm really not keen on. It looks like no camping for me until next spring and I'm so disappointed.

I was half minded to postpone the op, but it's been terribly painful the last few weeks and OH convinced me that would be silly.

Why can't you go with your arm in plaster???? be no different to being at home with it...you just need to make sure your OH can pitch your tent singlehanded (no pun intended!) and apart from which you will be miserable and a terrible patient at home knowing you didnt go camping!

I agree with Zeelees, especially if you go somewhere fairly local should you need to go back to the hsopital for a check up at all.

Really hope you'll get to go somewhere, it sounds like you could do with it xx

go - we took our son last year a week after a leg operation - bought a blowup sofa so he could lounge around outside & not be stuck inside (my excuse & I'm sticking to it)

Absolutely. You might not be able to help put up or strike camp, but you're not going to be able to do much around the house either, so get outdoors and enjoy the summer while it's here (or not here, as the case may be at the moment!).

Also, the bit just after the school holidays can still be very nice. I remember plenty of years where the summer never really started until September. & I still camp out in the August bank holiday.

I hope you do something, it would be a shame to write the whole season off.

Why not decide to go somewhere let everybody on here know where you are going and perhaps someone else may be there at the same time who could help erect your tent. you never know!

That's what I did last year when arthritic shoulder was really bad. Without such help I would have cancelled.

Pip had major leg surgery in February, and had an extrenal fixator on.   We were going to go away with him in this over half term - just have him sit around while his sister played.   As it was teh healing was quicker than expected and he had it removed just before half term - so we ended up not going away    Going very soon instead.

When I went into local camping store one of the assistants said that he has a similar fixator when he broke his leg and he still went camping.

Aw, definitely think again!  We went last year two days after OH had a bunion op.  It was a great distraction for him and forced him to rest, which he wouldn't have done at home.  The hospital barred him from the campsite showers, but we both had a giggle when I helped him strip wash in the tent

Hope your surgery goes well and you get spoiled rotten during your recovery.

Hmmm, after reading all this we discussed it again. I'm a lark, OH is an owl. I don't think I could, in all fairness, wake him up early every morning to help me dress, get my breakfast and so on (although he assures me he would be happy to do this, bless him). It would also mean he has to do all the driving, so no wine with dinner (we always eat out) for him.

Last time I was in plaster, I couldn't even get the dogs' leads on single-handed half the time, let alone fetch water and stuff. I'd hate to be idle while camping, I enjoy the pottering about. On balance, we decided against it.

I'm guaranteed a few weeks at his place being utterly spoiled, and then he has promised me my choice of somewhere sunny to go at the end of the summer. Oh, and a weekend in a country house hotel for my birthday in mid-August, when the plaster is due to be off.

I just hope he knows how expensive the Maldives is......

Thanks for all your advice and encouragement, though. This forum is so supportive!
