Hello Campers

I bow to your all superior knowledge!!! We have booked to go to the above for the last week in August and when I mention it to friends the response is "oh no midges"... so after doing a little research, it seems a little vague.  can anybody help with their experience.  I have a 3yr with Long blonde hair, so I dont want her to be uncomfortable being bitten if I can help it.

Also name a good repellant!

Thank you oh Wise Ones!

Well, I haven't had to tackle the midges yet, so can't speak from experience, but in preparation for a camping trip next month I have bought several repellents which have been recommended by others on the forum:

Avon Skin-So-Soft

Smidge that Midge

Stop Bite

. . . and a rather fetching pop-up hat with net attached!

Where I think you'll probably encounter them, dont worry too much that they'll ruin your holiday. We camp in Southern Scotland and Along the Solway and the Midgie population arent nearly as bad as up here where we live.

We have camped in the Newton Stewart area (actually near Kirkcudbright) in August twice and never saw a single midge. Hubby seems to be very sensitive to them so it would have been a disaster if there had been a lot around.

I think this part of Scotland doesnt suffer as much as further up the country.

Make sure you visit Cream o'Galloway if you get the chance. Its one of my kids favourite places in the whole country!! Fantastic value too.

I am very envious because I love SW Scotland.

You'll love Drumroaming! I should be down there first w/e September! Wonderful people!

If you're venturing deep into the forests though, take some protection against midgies in case - it very much depends on the weather and I'm down there around 25th June but staying at Moffat CCC site - they are also wonderful btw - we tell them we have an early (think the worst was 4.30am start and  they sorted everything so absolutely minimal disturbance to everyone else; only one person on a very packed site remarked to wardens about cars moving early on and he'd been answering a call of nature and saw us leave. He was amazed that 11 vehicles  and occupants could do this so quietly - we're well trained.

The midges are not that bad in that part of Scotland, especially near the sea where you'll get a breeze. You probably won't encounter any. If you do, they'll be a weak southern strain like the midges in the North of England and Wales. It's a different situation in the Highlands or Argyll!

Brilliant campsite and great area. Just went there for second time end of May bank hol and took some newbie campers.

Wind, rain....but they loved it!

No problem with midgies that weekend.

I'll third the cream of galloway for a day out your 3 year old will love it and you'll love the ice cream, for midgies we always use avon skin so soft (the green one).

Hope you have a great time, and get to sample some lovely ice cream.
