Don't have kids but if you're camping by a beach it's the best time to go in the sea as the beach will be empty and they were going to get wet anyway (okay that's what me and the OH do) Failing that as the others have said waterproofs and carry on doing what you want to do.
Our son is 8 and he has been camping since he was a baby. He has a small basket that he can choose things from home to take and we also have a zipped kiddy sort of briefcase that is crammed full of activity books, colouring books, pencils etc. He only uses these on holiday so they are like new each time.
Other than that we all have raincoats and go off out and just do what we had planned but in the rain. Most areas also have somewhere you can go on a rainy day thats mainly inside.
Hi, while I agree that playing out in it is fine, if it rains for several days in a row the novelty can wear off. Its also really difficult to dry anything in a tent and the wet coats and wellies can became a nightmare.
If I was you I would do some research on the internet before you go and find things to do in the area that might interest them - just in case. I would always want to know whether the local swimming pool and cinema is at least.
Board games, books, dominoes, cards, some felt tips and drawing paper, even the DS and some games are good as a standby.
Have fun, I am sure you will all have a great time.
Despite what some people may say about things like DSs - there are times wehn they can be a godsend when the weather is bad. Although mine had theirs with when we were away the only day we really saw them was the Sunday when it was wet, before Richard took them swimming - I ghad to stay with the dog (and we had a nice snooze together). A couple of years ago it was very wet and windy all week and if they hadn't had the DSs with tehm I think that I would have gone totally crazy. We did all the family games etc. but when they played on their DSs it gave me the chance to relax myself,
We have two girls and a boy aged 10, 8 and 7. As well as the usual boardgames, cards and dice (Yahtzee and Beetle are family favourites), I also raid Poundland before we leave and put together a bag of surprise craft bits.
Last year contained plasticine, pipe cleaners (to make a model family, animals, flowers etc) and those lightweight aircraft. I got a press out model making kit from the Works for Ben - he showed a surprising amount of patience with making a motorbike, although getting it home intact was quite a task!
This will be our first year with EHU so are debating taking the laptop for DVDs.
Hope you have a great holiday and the sun shines for you.
Hiyas Monty8, i agree with all the above & yes playing in the rain for a full week or so probably is not your ideal holiday lol. I would take a laptop or portable dvd player too. We take ours to watch family movies have some popcorn etc make a movie/ night / day. Also we have some games on the laptop that kids love to play so other alternatives are available. Yes also they have Ds ( which really are a godsend when all else fails). Hope you have a great time ....hope your dog is feeling better & your getting some sleep.
Madz.
P.S.
our holiday didn't go as planned but we did have a good time even so. Its a long long story ! lol
Our 2 most memorable camping memories were spent in the rain. 1st one we spent the afternoon making and decorating paper boats. When the weather cleared we had a grand race in the stream that ran through the campsite.
The other time we got the games compendium out. divided all the counters up and taught the kids to gamble with cards. we had an hilarious time. When I popped over to the shop at teatime it was amazing how many people remarked what a good time we appeared to be having (we honestly hadn't realised we were laughing that loudly) and quite a few said they'd been so tempted to come over and join in

We just wrapped them up in their waterproofs, but thankfully it only rained for a day. We had a stash of toys hidden, some new drawing books and the DS for emergency use. I took a few craft things, but as daughter one loves to build massive models, we were somewhat restricted on getting it all back again (and in one piece!)
Love the paper boat race idea, will be putting that in my ideas book!
