We have two camping trips planned during wasp season.  Has anyone got any recommendations for deterring the little pests.  During our trip last year, as soon as any of us bought any food out, there they were. One of our friends has a jar to catch them, but they managed to escape!

Just cut a large plastic bottle in half ,fill the bottom with something sweet and water and pop the top on upside down to act like a funnel :)

Ours worked so well last year (averaging 30 wasps a day) we left it with the site owner so they could use it :D

Oh and leave it a few meters away from where you are eating ;)

Thanks for the idea!

Just another, have a bin with a lid on it rather than just a plastic bag hanging near the tent...

Love our set-up and need no more tents or gear, so trying to stop looking!

This is exactly what we use - works really well. Have also found that it works better if you mix the drinks, bit of coke, bit of fanta and bit of beer etc. I guess some wasps are fussy!

Wasps have a superb ability to sniff out goodies. They use sensors on their antennae and can smell chemicals in concentrations as tiny as a few parts per billion in the air.

So the "sweet offering" as suggested works really well - just stir it up from time to time and avoid leaving any temptations close you.

Last year I used a 500ml coke bottle, put a bit of jam in the bottom with some water and bored a small hole in the lid with a penknife, we were catching about 20 a day!

Last year the pound shop had those wasp jar things in. Got a couple and they worked fine. Seen them elsewhere much more expensive, in which case I wouldn't have got them but gone for the 'bottle trick'.

Wasp and bug tennis with the electric bats is so satisfying, big blue bottles make big zaps and need a few to get the better of them.

Honey bees and bumble bees are excused tho.

I know this works great on files/mosquitoes - I bought one as a stocking filler for my OH who hates mosquitoes with a passion and he enjoys nothing more than the sport of catching them with this and watching them frazzle!
