Sorry if this post is in the wrong place, newbie here lookling for advice

Our brand new 4 man Gelert Atlantis tent now has a bloomin' big hole in the all-in-one ground sheet due to heat from Hubby's scooter exhaust melting it. There are smaller holes in the flysheet but these can easily be repaired. However the hole in the ground sheet is the size of a side plate!!!

Can this be patched either side with a bit of groundsheet (a cheapie one bought off ebay) and Tenacious Tape or do we accept that this is £95 down the drain :(

Any advice most welcome thanks

Hiyas, sorry to hear about your problem. I'm no expert but i would say this could be patched. Maybe on the underneath & top ? Plus having an extra footprint/ground sheet i would say would make things fine. I'm sure some one with better knowledge will be along to tell exactly whats best to do.

Madz.

Welcome to UK CS.

My sympathies. As a scooter rider (cack handed division), this is just the sort of thing I'd do if I brought it in the tent for the night .

First trip out, I managed to scorch a hole in our brand new Orchy carpet, by putting the grill on the floor (gas lit) to "warm up" the tent. Mrs G was not best pleased

Anyway, I'd make up a footprint groundsheet to fit under the tent, then repair the tent's sewn in groundsheet in the way you've mentioned. That way it should be pretty watertight. A picnic rug over the top and you won't know it's there.

I'd be more bothered about the holes in the flysheet but you seem to be OK with fixing them.

As to whether he'll do something else daft, he's a scooter boy. Anything's possible

Thanks for the replies :D

Tent wasn't even up, this all happened in the garage!!!! Bag it comes in is also ruined but that's not essential.

Will have a go at repairs and then perhaps give it a test in the garden for going away for a weekend.

fingers crossed this works.

cut 2 pieces of ground sheet twice the size of the hole, use some rubber adhesive and bond one piece to either side of the gash/hole this will be flexable, pliable and waterproof.

If it were me - I'd try to do an invisible(ish) repair -

Buy some similar coloured groundsheet / tarp - then lay it on the garage floor -

Put your tent groundsheet over that, and pencil around the shape of the hole - be accurate as possible.

Then cut out the shape of your hole - again accurately

You may need to trim the actual tent groundsheet to make th hole a regular, non-frayed - sensible shape?????

Now cut a squeare in the tarp BIGGER than the hole in the groundsheet -

Lay tent out again - put the square of tarp (see above) under the groundsheet, and CAREFULLY mark out the hole again -

then take big piece out, and put adhesive (test for compatability on spare material) all over the BIG piece -

Place little piece onto the marked out area -

You now have a STICKY - and fitted PATCH for the groundsheet -

complete the repair with gaffa tape underneath if required -

Should be fairly invisible (depending on initial marking etc)

:)

Alternatively - Duct Tape the lot ! :)

Gaffer tape is no use for long term repairs, much better to glue a square of ground sheet over the hole.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Where's the cheapest place for  flysheet repair kits? Internet or my not so local camping shop?

Now for the important bit, carefully bring the scooter engine up to normal operating temperature, and then taking care to keep fingers well covered wipe away the sticky mess from the exhaust with a thick cloth, finish the job with your usual brand of metal polish after allowing the exhaust to cool again.

LOL boys boys the scooter is fine, infact it's crud free! It was the heat from it rather than the actual exhaust pipe.

thanks for the link Mike I will check it out :D

well just typical, test erecting our palace and a rip on the SIG, duly repaired with unibond rubber glue & sandwiched between ripstop ground sheet (sprinkle talk powder over the repair to stop excess glue adhering to unwanted items) worked a treat
