romany girl, I love that story!

Reminded me of my experience with the French "hole in the ground" toilets...
We were on a study trip with my History of Art Class from university. When driving from Germany to Spain, we stopped at a public toilet in France, there were two cubicles with an open corridor in between. I went into one, another girl into the other. We flushed the toilets simultaniously, - and the others, waiting for us at the end of the corridor, could hear a simultanious "Scheisse!" from both sides, then saw us jumping out of our respective cubicles, banging our heads together and going down to the floor... We hadnt learned yet, that it is a good idea to stand as far as possible from the "hole in the ground", when you flush it(later, on many travels in the Middle East, I could have wished for some possibility to flush the "toilet"...)!
On the same study trip, we stayed at a VERY cheap little hotel in Northern Spain. I got a terrible diarrhoa and one night got stuck on the only toilet, which was a kind of plywood cubicle at the end of a long corridor, with a very fragile door. The sink was some metres away in the corridor.
While I was busy in there, a very drunken Spanish hotel guest came home and wanted to use the toilet. The whole cubicle was shaking, when he desperately tried to open the door, while I just as desperately was clinging to the doorhandle from the inside. He kept on shouting, and at some point another Spanish guest got tired of it, opened his door and shouted "hijo da puta" (son of a bitch) at him. The drunken one shouted back. And so they continued for hours as it seemed to me. Other guests woke up and shouted their comments. Finally the man left my toilet door, and I could here him peeing in the sink... Everybody went to bed again. Believe me, even when my attac of diarrhoa was over, I stayed inside that tiny cubicle, until my fellow travellers woke up in the morning and rescued me!
