We've used WAG bags (bags with crystal/gel to absorb) for ocassional no 2's and we just seal the bags up afterwards and dispose of them.

Whatever you use I would think you'd want to dispose of it straight away rather than leave it hanging around the tent so you could actually just use bags without the kitty litter or just add water to the bucket to swish it out and use it as a potty.

We use a BWL and WAG bags for overnight use if there are toilets on site but where you are using something as your only toilet and it's more than one person I would want a proper chemical loo. I really wouldn't want to leave a site owner multiple bags of poo to dispose of or have to keep taking a bucket to the CDP after every poo'y use.

We did a toiletless site overnight in the spring with a Highlander Folding Toilet with home made lid. Worked fine for both, we just moved it outside the tent in between uses and emptied it regularly down the Elsan point. We don't use any absorbant just the bags the toilet uses with folding bucket suspended underneath in case of leaks...

Love our set-up and need no more tents or gear, so trying to stop looking!

If you are going to a site without facilities I would invest in a proper chemical toilet - you dont have to spend a fortune on one (we actually bought ours off ebay).

Yes they do take up more room in the car but they are great, easy to empty and no smells, even in hot weather. If its you and 5 kids camping then I think you are brave for even thinking about it but maybe someone will be along to say they do it all the time!

my first thought is, there is water in a toilet for a reason, and that reason is to stop/reduce the smell.  if you don't have any fluid it must surely whiff a bit??   i wouldn't want that hanging around my tent!

we use a chemical loo so it can be used for both 1's and 2's (my DHis disabled, plus 3 kids between 3 and 5) so i empty it every couple of days, wouldn't leave home with out mine!

I can't imagine camping with kids without a porta potti.....they always want to go first thing in the morning and last thing at night so is a lot better just to have it close by and save a trip to the facilities when you least feel like it...plus ours has a comfy lid on it so I sit on it to eat my breakfast!!!!!

I noticed under your post that you have 5 children, after changing that many nappies I'm quite sure that a No 2 in a bucket really isn't worth worrying about a long as it is emptied as soon as.
I would probably take a nice big bottle of zaflora to musk any smells.
