Lucky.
I'm sure I read somewhere that most roofbox manufacturers recommend no more than 60mph.

Had a Pheasant hit ours last year not a pretty sight  managed to repair with fibreglass.

Was worried about ours opening so bought and fitted these either side of lock

My son enquired about insecure load conviction and he was advised this is nigh on impossible to pursue, unless you can witness the event, and presumably get number plate of the vehicle from which the articles fell off.

Insecure load convictions are quite common. It's not hard to follow a trail of debris to a car on the hard shoulder

How strange......we have a roofbox which I mentioned on another thread before, we bought it on a car boot sale for £10.  Its fastened down to the roof bars with u bolts. The box itself is fastened shut with a padlock. Been all over the place, up & down motorways and absolutlely everywhere in all weathers and there has never been any sign of it flying open. We don't use any bunjee cords or ratchet straps. Are you sure it was fastened down properly in the first place/ seems most odd !

Most roof boxes don't use a padlock, but use a lock with rotating mechanism behind to secure the lid. Unfortunately this can come loose if the box lid flexes too much. I'm sure Dezzie is fully aware of how to fit his roof box correctly, doing it for a number of years with no problems whatsoever.

I can assure you that the roofbox was fastened down properly. I've been using the box for 5 years on 3 different vehicles and this is the first time its happened. The fact that it happened less than 40 miles from our home after travelling about 100 miles is very puzzling as there is no visible damage to either roofbox,bungee cords or lock of the roofbox. We stopped for lunch in Carlisle and even there I couldnt see any apparent tampering or I'd have made double sure the box lid was secure. The box itself was still completely attached to the roofbars - the u bolts were not in anyway affected and there's no way the actual box would have fallen off the car. The lid simply opened about 5 inches. All this talk of insecure load convictions etc is a bit unsettling. There was absolutely NOTHING i could have possibly done that would have made that box open. I pack our box "off" the car and its permanently connected to our roofbars which are then lifted onto the car and locked into place - that way I have no space for error as i have to make sure they and the roofbox are secure and safe before I drive off. I even remove them when i get to the campsite so as not to drive about with bars and box during our stay (wasting fuel). This is what is puzzling me because I am very conscientious when it comes to safety and security. Just for the record too - I was on the inside lane doing 60MPH - using cruise control. With the current price of fuel im not hurrying anywhere

we're going away this Friday again and i will be making sure that I invest in some ratchet straps this time.

Thule recommend no more than 85 mph. Happened to our friends a few years back, like yourself Dezzie they had used it time and time again but on this one occasion it just flew open. It was replaced at no cost to them by the supplier.

We bought the Thule back box which sits on a frame on the tow bar. No drag, no 60 mph limit as you have with a trailer and a fab bit of kit.
