Hi All,

I have been lurking around this site for a few months, I've posted a few questions and answered a few here and there, generally my posts being fairly practical in nature.

The advice I've received through this site either directly through asking questions or indirectly from just reading threads has been invaluable and strangely moreish (thanks to all I've chatted to); but I've decided I should introduce myself on a more sociable note so here goes...

About five months ago, I decided that 2011 was the year I would introduce my young family (partner=27; son=4.5) to camping. Now, I was brought up on camping as a child in the late '70s - '80s though haven't been much since then so earlier this year I started acquiring the required kit and two things happened...

1) Once I started, I couldn't stop adding to the 'holiday stuff'.
2) The OH and little 'un got right into going round camping stores, getting gear with me.

Cut a long story short, we have now got pretty much everything we need, had a long weekend in June to trial the tent (they loved it)...and our long awaited 2 weeks in the Lake District begins this Saturday.

I've spent a king's ransom but I'm hoping the kit we now have will facilitate many years of cheap holidays.

Roll on the weekend!

Hope to chat to everyone on here for some time to come.

Thanks for listening,
Marc.

Hi ukmarc. So you think you have everything you "Need" do you. WRONG. Not even close There's always just one more bit of Essential kit you just have to have.

Hope you have some great camping holidays

Hi 9iron, good point, I'm thinking a gas powered coolbox and a Cabanon. I'm screwed, aren't I?

You will love it more & more the freedom you realise you have got and the different people you will meet.

Be aware it can rain anywhere for the whole time especially around mountains the Lakes have a weather forecast of their own. We had 13 days out of 14 just 4 mile from Amblside when we was on walking hols. But  we did not care we just carried on. If you go out in the rain make it fun for your little man, by having his wellies on and splashing in all the puddle with him. Take a flask of hot ?? whatever you like including soup 3 little mugs,Your hands round them and your warm up with it going down your throat.

If your little man is enjoying his fun in the rain he will enjoy camping and if he is happy so will you both be. As the kids are the hardest at times to occupy when wet weather yet really are they or is it because we have made them too soft to take the rain on them after all rain cannot hurt you as long as you have & keep a the likes of a jogging suit each to change into quickly when you get home or even keep the flask for when you get home so you can have a hot drinl straight away you can make it fun. Teach him by helping you put the tent up dad, he can hold the pegs for you and go round with you. doing it. Make him join in so he is not left out of it in the car or he will never get used to rain at camp. Teach him dad its your job, too many kids are just sent away either to play or to sit in the car to keep out of the way. That is not the way to get them to enjoy all weathers  and learn  at a young age

Have a lovely time all of you.

Thanks Beanpark, that's brilliant advice! You're right, tot loves helping and knocking in the pegs. As for the rain, we got him a splashsuit which he really likes (it's got dinosaurs on it) which I hope will keep him relatively dry. It's going to be brilliant for little 'un, we live within 5 minutes of a huge city centre and we have no garden to speak of...a whole new world awaits him, just three days away!
