Its always best to contact the campsite and ask as things do vary a lot from site to site. When we book we always tell them the size of the tent

Everything has been said before, but since nobody ever listens we have to keep going back and saying it all over again and again and again
If your tent footprint is 8m x 4.5m and the pitch is 9m and 6m then you ain't gonna fit on it, as you need to allow at least 1m around the tent for your guys, meaning you'd need a pitch at least 10m x 6.5m!!
Some sites say your car (and any other extras) must all fit on your pitch, others just ask for your tent footprint. Personally, I always give my tent size when booking and ask if their pitch size must include the car (as we sometimes need to take 2 cars)
I think the best thing to do would be give the site a ring and ask them.
There's no rule of thumb. At the moment I'm on a popular c&cc site built on a cliff ledge so space is at a premium, it's a cramped jumble here with some cars on pitches and other pitches that aren't accessible by car.
Other sites do insist you park in your pitch especially if you want EHU, I'd have to look carefully at these before booking.
Many of the sites that we use do not allow cars on the camping field, not even to unload. So it would be best for you to contact the campsite before you book.
Nowadays, tents and other equipment are getting so big and heavy that some folks must struggle to get their stuff from their cars to their pitches.

What's the relevance of that rule ? Why would you need your car on the pitch if you require EHU, very strange. If sites have carparks could your car not be left there, supposing you don't store things in it that you require daily.

Pete.
Sorry, I re-read that and I missed out punctuation. EHU is more likely to be on a limited size pitch where car, tent et al must fit on the pitch space.
