Just wanted to say a huge thanks to everyone who contributes to the message boards here - we have our first trip planned next week and we've learned so much from others who have shared their experiences, both good and bad!
We've picked a campsite (Noah's Ark) that's not too far away with lots to do for our daughter and plenty of rainy day options. We've had a practice putting the tent up in the garden (in the rain!) and have plans to set up the cooker etc.. before we go just so we can get familiar with it.
We did go a bit crazy thinking we needed everything to get going (ie. side extension, shelf unit etc..) however since reading the posts on here and realising it's highly unlikely that everything we've bought will fit into our Ford C Max we're prioritising what we need to take and what we can leave for next time (once we have a roofbox).
We are prepared to 'go with the flow' and that things may not go smoothly and will take ready-made food and a flask to keep us going til the tent's up.
If the messages on here are any indication of the camping community in general then I'm really looking forward to meeting some lovely people. I'm sure it'll be clear that we're amateurs (even without the 'L' plates I'm considering putting on the tent!) but everyone has to start somewhere!
Thanks again for the helpful advice - it really is appreciated.

Amanda

What a lovely post!  Thanks vickerys!

You seem to have absolutely the right attitude, and you'll have a great time.  We've met some terrific people whilst camping, and the gang in this forum are a fine example of how sociable campers can be.

Enjoy your first camp, and come back to tell us all about it - with piccies!

I also have to say that I gained an enormous amount of knowledge by just browsing the forums - it made me think about things which had not even crossed my mind!

I have gone from being an anti-camping person to a completely converted one in just one summer season and so far we have had tremendous wind during one camping trip - our tent felt like a windsail! We have had torrential rain and even lightening and thunder. I am hoping that our next trip to Cornwall will be a dry sunny one.

So thanks everyone as it is thanks to you that our camping trips were well planned and enjoyable!

Good luck to newbie campers!

I too was a newbie camper once, and learnt a lot by being on UKCS, and am still learning!

Yes I agree this site is fantastic and very addictive - cant resist logging on each day to see what is happening in the camping world!
I actually pick our campsites through looking at reviews on here. Were off next week for the first time this year - can't wait!
Happy camping everyone.

Hi Amanda, You will love it, the Xl is a great tent, we are a family of four and a big Labrador and we never feel cramped, as too for the C-Max on our first trip we packed everything and everyone in, got to the site , opened the doors and basically everything and everyone fell out. ! Great fun.We have invested in a top box AND trailer now.Don't worry on site about being new, you seem prepaired and organised, take your time and enjoy it's all part of the fun setting up.

Hope you have good weather and enjoy, look forward to your posts

Cheers regards Dave

Hi
Great stuff just remember we were all newbies once
