I agree that the Jorvik Viking Centre is nothing to write home about - a long queue for a short ride around a smelly village set up. Maybe one to go with when you have the kids with you.
There will be street entertainers around when you visit, so take some time to stop and watch them - they are usually very good. There will possibly be some sort of festival on at the time, and again, that is usually nice to have a wander around.
Lovely pub called Harkers in the centre - usual pub grub, but lovely sofa's where you can sit and people watch for a while whilst you regain your shopping strength. Lots of different ales for you to try as well.
All the best for your week without the kids and even more so for your wife's treatment x
I am lucky in that my kids go to their Grans quite regularly, and sometimes when they are away anyway I will plan in a quick weekend camp. I have to say that it truly is bliss, not hearing 'I want' once over the whole time and being able to be utterly selfish and suit yourself. I think you'll have a ball.
Good luck for the treatment Mrs D we'll be thinking of you.
Thanks everyone for the very nice comments. We're packed and ready to go. I think we'll avoid Jorvik, but I really fancy the castle museum and the city walls (legs permitting). Just the thought of chilling for a few days is the big attraction. I will post photos when we get back
Happy camping everyone.

Cool campers use Delta Pegs.
