to everyone who gave me advice on roofboxes.  My handiholdall arrived today so a huge thanks for this suggestion.  OH loves it cos it trakes up hardly any room in the garage....... which is good given that I have a huge pile of camping stuff taking up a fair chunk of space in there.

OOOoo roof box advice - can someone point me at that thread? Thinking of investing if we have any hope of getting the dog the car for a trip!

We used our handirack & holdall for the first time last week too, and love it! Brilliant idea, especially for people like us with a small car who might buy a new car in the next yr or so as it'll fit most cars .

We used our handirack and roofbag a few weeks ago and it was a life saver. I can now see out the back window (albeit a small bit!) which was better. We went to Isle of Man on the ferry and back with no problems with it at all.

I would advise having a practice run on putting it on the car though.

We bought a handirack and holdall and after a few uses the pump broke.

An electric pump doesnt inflate hard enough and of course the fitting isnt standard so mouth is needed to finish off the inflating!

Dont even get me started on the lack of waterproofing!

Always put a large plastic sheet in the holdall before filling it then wrap the sheet over the top to keep things dry if it rains as you drive.

Will save alot of time and money in the launderette :)

On the plus side, it does hold a hell of a lot of gear :)
