You should get a few days out of a cartridge but you should always carry at least one spare in case you run out halfway through cooking.

When buying replacement cartridges check the contents as they can vary between about 130g and 225g depending upon the make, a seemingly cheap cartridge may contain very little gas and run out much quicker.

Carry at least 4 cannisters with you so you can swap them around. You'll find that the pressure drops VERY significantly with butane as the cannister gets colder and colder in use and soon becomes useless. Swap it for a warm one and you're back in business. You can re-use the original one when it warms up a bit.
