Hi all,

Maybe an odd question but ive been told some hard cheeses do not need a fridge, making them ideal for camping!

Anyone care to share any cheesy tips, or know of which cheeses are suitable? Obviously I dont want anything too fancy otherwise I wont be able to buy it anywhere - supermarket would be nice...

I have always found cheese to keep well in an airtight plastic container when camping.

Same here. Cheddar, Leicester, Lancashire,etc. are all good. Take the piece out of supermarket wrapper first.

Cheese will keep well enough for a reasonable period out of a fridge but may get sweaty if it is left out & too warm.

The Frome Cheese show always takes place in ambient temperatures and the cheeses always display & eat well.

Cheese always eats better at room tempreture anyway, it brings out the full flavour and creaminess, Its fine to store cheese at room tempreture, but it may get a bit 'Ripe' if left for any length of time in a warm place, hot awning, tent ect, where there is full sun. i have always found that the Cheddars, Brie, and Blues keep best, Edam and the more rubbery type cheeses soon get a strong 'taste of the cow' and become unplesent.

According to a camp cook book, hard cheeses like Cheddar and Gloucestershire need no refrigeration, soft cheeses like brie and Camembert are not recommended. Best cheese is really hard ones like Parmesan!

as a self confessed cheesaholic (currently only with a cool box for camping) this post is very pleasing. I had thought cheese would be off the menu but now I am a very happy girl

If you like cheese I can recommend Caerfai Farm Campsite in St. Davids - they make their own organic cheeses and sell them in the camp shop! Pefect solution. They make a cheddar or Caerphilly and my fave Caerphilly with Leek and Garlic - YUM! Lovely site too.

Lakeland sell a plastic container with an adjustable protected air vent in the lid.It can be used in or out of the fridge, stops the cheese getting sweaty and mouldy.

Bainbridge Inngs in Hawes is another cheese-tastic site! The Wensleydale Creamery is in the town (an easy 10 mins walk). You can see the cheese being made, there is a great shop with loads of free tasters and a big cafe.
