Oh dear we have just come back and had a lovely game of cricket with the members of the 3 other tents around us. Children and parents all joining in. Only once did the ball go over to someone else but they happily threw it back.

I do however understand the situation from both sides - my son took his football (he'd be depressed without it - seriously!). However I didn't let him bounce it cause that noise gets on my nerves as well - he and his sister gently kicked it to each other along the road way or he just practised his skills like dribbling etc. We also had tennis rackets which we played gently with. I think its all down to having respect for other people and also being sensible with what and how you play.

Our site did have an enclosed ball court as well which we did allow our son to walk to and use however the rule on the site was no unaccompanied under 12's my son is only 10 - so we were breaking that rule as well. The only time we let him go was when we were preparing dinner and we couldn't play with him.

I've camped as a youngester with my parents in a tent and a caravan and understand the no ball rule we used to have a swing ball and a football on a bit of elastic!

Blimey - as a newbie camper going on our first trip next week, this is one of the things I hadn't realised I would need to give such serious thought to.

Until I have experienced it I can't really comment on how I will feel, but I do think that if you go to a campsite that caters for families as opposed to the quiet more secluded ones, you expect to have kids noise and kids playing about you. I don't mind kids playing with balls around me, but I do expect them to use common sense and not be kicking their mightiest wallops if they are close to my house or car - so I expect I will feel the same about my tent.

I have a 2 yr old and 5 yr old - I was going to take them a small balls and foam cricket bat - chances of them even hitting it, let alone it going more than a foot will be a miracle, and they are clearly not old enough to go to a park on their own. I was intending them to play by my tent.

What age do you think we should ban this? Is it fair to allow toddlers to play ball but ban teenagers?

Hi Egbert, I do know where you are coming from in relation to tots not being able to hit or throw too hard (as the mum of a four year old), but if the rules are no ball games then it is unfair to others to have tots play between tents too.  Most sites will provided some space for ball play so we should all keep the rules.
