I've got a couple of sheets of plastic mesh (that builders' merchants use when making stacks of bricks) that goes outside the tent door. It stops you sinking into the mud. I got them from the builders who were building an extension down my road. They thought I was mad.
Inside, I have a couple of cheap (50p each when Woolies were closing down) cotton bathmats that go inside the door. I find them more absorbent than the dirt trapper mats and better at dog paws (I also recommend Tesco micro-fibre cloths, £1 for 3, for paw wiping - they seem to get off more dirt than a towel).
Wet or muddy shoes are removed on entry and stood on old newspaper.
