Straight through the centre is the most efficient option as the smoke will draw better than being horizontal through the wall then going up

Also the heat of of the pipe is inside your tent, so it will be warmer

I was a coward and went for the side wall option as I didn't want to cut a hole in the roof etc

It depends how muh clearance you can give the stove wherever it is positioned (how many are in tent etc)

We use  a stove in our Soulpad tribe 5000 straight out the top didnt want to make another hole . Some sort of fire guard is a good idea with kids . I Made our from 1inch stainless mesh it fits round the rear and sides as we sleep round it and the stove door is toward the entrance ! I'll go look for some pic'c

Side and straight up and out - frontier stove £130.
I was worried it would take up too much room or be in the way but its great - also easier to get pipes in and out with it being at side rather than centre - ebay welding blanket on floor - shame you cant get a spark arrestor/rain cap for the stove - tried making one with beer can and mesh but it only lasted one go :D
