hi all after many many years of camping i have a bit of a problem, recently bought a used 2008/9 sunncamp vario 900 massively bi tent and very nice.  however just returned early from a very very wet and windy holiday in south devon ( no names no pack drill)  everytime it rained we had small ingress of water in the form of drips and the top of the tent was wt as if it were condensation. Now i do know the tent is leaking and it isnt in just one place its generally all over so i am assuming the waterproofing has failed.  i cant understand how such a young tent that doesnt appear to have had mega amounts of use can be so leaky. my 2001 trailer tent has never evr leaked a drop in all its life, i was wondering if when the tent was new it never had the proofing activated i dont know just guessing so any help would be great. thanks

we had a vario 600 and we had a lot of condensation whenever it rained from the internal poles that go from the back to the front. Also from the skylight area. I think alot of it wsas due to ventilation. The water would travel down the roof onto the poles and drip down.
We loved our vario but we left it behind after it ripped on holiday. One of the things we will be checking when looking at new tents is the poles inside!

How used was it, that's the question? Decent qualitry synthetic tents have a cumulative life span of about six months of UV exposure...so if you used it for one two week holiday plus three weekends a year it will last you about seven years. But if you spent two months camping per year, the life span would be three years. Even less if it was in a sunny climate. Or it might have been a display tent?

Anyway it's easy enough to tell if the laminated layers are starting to break down from UV exposure. The fabric will go stiff or crunchy, the inside layers will start to look milky and it may start to split along creases.

On the other hand, it could just be condensation.  Do you cook in the tent or bring in wet clothes? Do you remember to keep the vents open and air the tent out fully every day? If you answered yes, yes, no and no then it's almost certainly condensation rather than premature fabric delamination.

hi val we at first thought condensation as when we first niticed it the weather was more sun than rain and as there are no roof vents then yes condensation will build esp when you have a heater belting out full blast to keep warm lol, oh i do love british summers. however we watched closely and we had a full day of warm sunny weather and inside was dry, door was open and it suddenly started raining and within 10 mins the inner side of roof was wet to the touch.  i am convinced this tent has been well used despite its fresh appearance, i did notice that on the pole sleeves the layers orproofing are coming away but by the same token because the tubes are curves when you insert poles ( fibreglass )the metal ferrul on the end doesnt half dig into the material to get round the curves i put the delamination down to this fact but maybe not,i have decided to seam sell the roofseams and reproof the whole lot as its a bloody hugh tent and versatile being 5 or 9 berth. As to cooking i prefer to use a seperate utility tent 5000 hydro and fireproof. much safer.   i also have a jamet trailer tent and no hastle with that lol and a wynster corvus 8 tent again zero hastle interestly both are metal poled .
