We are going to the NFOL this year, as it is reasonably close to us, well a couple of hours away. Just hope the rain stays away from Thursday. Any body else going, though i think it is only open to members of the CCC.

think its only safe for caravans because they will not burn to a crisp if a failed lantern falls onto it.

Also who organises for somebody to go around and collect all the burnt wires from farm land, before cattle and sheep can chew them. or from hay fields where they get chopped to smaller, bite sized, pieces for grazing stock to eat.

They should be banned along with fireworks

yes i am grumpy about them, i have seen the damage and loss of life, they cause  to farm stock, and wildlife

OT

I agree with dogtlotdog!

There is no harm in releasing these lanterns as long as they are tethered and once burnt out can be disposed of properly. The wire frame which is used in the construction of these lanterns is dangerous to the point of deadly for animals. Not to mention the possible dangers of any lantern which lands that hasn't burnt out thoroughly. There was also a report on countryfile some weeks back of the destruction they HAVE (not could, HAVE!) caused to farmlands and residential property if they have not extinguished before landing.

The sentiments of these lanterns are great and would not be against another form of pyrotechnic display if guarantees can be made that nothing can be harmed once out of the control of the 'releaser'

I don't want to be negative, just want to point out there are hidden dangers of releasing these lanterns, especially in the more rural parts of this country.

If you want to read a BBC article:

Chinese Lanterns

Quote from the NFOL website

NAKED FLAMES for the purpose of illuminating decorated units and street scenes are absolutely forbidden for safety reasons. Units must not be joined by decorations or strings of lights and must be 6 metres apart at all time.

It is just a lit celebration, not Chinese lanterns!

poppy dog is right none of those dangerous lanterns. It is all mainly led lights etc. I think it was started to highlight the end of the camping season. But there are plenty of traders there, so hopefully a bargain or two to be had. Own sanitation is required, kamp kazi for us, and non EHU.
