Just back from a caravan club site where they didn't have any toilet, shower or washing facilities (never again!!!) - just an area of about 2 meters deep x 5 meters long with 2 taps and access to an underground septic tank with a screw on lid to empty your chemical loos down.
The drinking water tap was approx 3 meters from the opening to the tank and had a hosepipe attached which you had to be careful not to dip into the waste water (containing god knows what) that was sloshing around.
I have to say they were doing our group a favor allowing us to take over the site and have tents as well as caravans. They usually only take a few caravans/motorhomes.
But I was actually wondering whether there is a legal certain limit you need between your sh*t pit and the drinking water tap? All the other sites we have been to have taps way, way away from the toilet waste disposal and the disposal units have never been an open tank where you can see EVERYTHING sitting there.
I can do germs - my own germs - but not everyone else'. Bit of a dampner on what was a great weekend!
Did it actually state it was drinking water? In these situations its probably better to take bottled water for drinking. The tap water would be ok if boiled, ie for making tea etc.
I don't know much about that type of set up, but I do know for domestic and industrial properties there are quite strict requirements for backflow prevention. So for instance if your home shower is fed directly off the cold mains, (rather than a tank in the loft) it should have either a non return valve fitted (so water can only come out and not get sucked back up if the pressure drops), or the length of the shower hose should be such that the showerhead can not rest in standing water (eg at the bottom of the showertray or bath).
The situtation you've described does sound like a danger to health.

I agree. I dont think I'd have used the tap for consumption. Bottled water would've been a better option.

Cool campers use Delta Pegs.
The happiest people aren't the ones who have everything they are the ones who make the most of everything they have
This kind of reminds of something we saw at the weekend. We went to a big car show and stayed on site. Round the back of the toilet block were the waste water disposal points. Some bright spark decided to empty their toilet waste down the waste water, 1 blocked waste water sink and loads of flies.
It makes you wonder what some people are like at home.
