We have a beloved Tilley Lamp that we have used to keep us warm and gives us light for the past 20 years on our many camping trips. Now with the recent sad news of people with BBQs inside tents and carbon monoxide poisoning I am wondering whether it is safe?

Does anyone else have a Tilley and do they use it inside their tent? Are they safe?

We use a Coleman dual fuel stove and lamp inside our tent, but we use canvas non SIG tents so we are not sealed in as SIG tents are.

I think you have to make your own decision and assess the risk in your own situation.

Hasn't killed me yet. Make sure the tent has some ventilation and be aware of the symptoms of CO poisoning.

We use our Tilley inside the tent but make sure that the vents are open, we also use a carbon monoxide detector, just in case. All our cooking is via electric apart from the BBQ which we always use outside the tent.

I don't see any issues with using a Tilley in a tent if you've not had any problems in twenty years then that would be enough for me . I'd question using it in a new tent with SIG far to sealed in for my liking .

I like the carbon detector. We used to be very happy with our canvas tent and the Tilley, but now have a Montana with SIG so prob need to be a bit more careful.

This is a contentious issue for us, we have a tent with a SIG.

OH always wants the Tilley in the tent, I dont!.... (I think it's far too risky).

tilley's in tents Don't do it even if thet are burning 100% right,unless you turn them off before you go to bed.

Even in my youth when we used tents without SIGs the Tilley was only used outside, when sat round the campfire, or under the dining shelter, not taken into the tent when we went to bed, torches were used for going to bed.

In my early caravanning days we used Tilleys and similar when sat in an awning of an evening - but caravan awnings don't have SIGs, in fact we didn't use a groundsheet at all.

Personally I wouldn't take the risk of using any sort of lamp inside a tent: gas, Tilley, Coleman unleaded or whatever.

So when you're feeling tired, confused, suffering memory loss etc., or are unconscious, what would you be able to do about the situation?
