A 65L rucksack is enormous! That's what my 14 year old was carrying on his DofE this year and they had a 20 mile hike each day, carrying tents, cooking equipment, food, water, clothes, sleeping bags and mats and everything else. You just need sleeping bag and mat, clothes, personal toiletries and some emergency food, yup? You could shove all that in a large day sack and dangle your mat off the back.

You can get tick removers at pet shops. Take Skin so Soft + another insect repellant, a small personal first aid kit, a hat to protect against sun and when it gets cold, minimal toiletries (arrange to share where possible), small towel, lots of socks and clean undies fir every day, one or at most two  sets of spare clothes and I would suggest a very light pair of camping flip flops to wear around the campsite so you can air your feet out and not have to wear boots all the time. A good sleeping bag is essential...Tesco does a great Ultralight one at 50% off atm...and a camp pillow is a light but worthwhile luxury. Also take a plastic bag for wet and dirty clothes.

The tick removers that Val suggests are the ones recommended by most Lyme Disease organisations:

Tick Twister

I'm confident my list covers everything I need because I use it regularly in UK mountain areas. Items that you might miss if you relied on my list might be things that I have included as part of other things - the tick twister for example lives in my first aid kit and I have a whistle tied onto my compass. Looking at other lists is never a bad idea.

This is a great resource:

If it's American based I'd not bother   Seriously though Sanhozay's list has it covered,  no need for anything else.   In her post Karen said "Tents, a cooking pot and shovels will be provided"  & as she also said she's never done anything like this before I'd say this is a thing that's been organised by at least a few people who know what they're doing (Ihope so anyway !) so if anything out of the ordinary is needed it ought to be provided by the organisers.

Karen I hope you enjoy it,  I've not been to  Knoydart but I'm told it's beautiful.  I'm quite jealous !

So you have not been but you know that a list is complete!? Well done!

Er I've not been but my OH & 2 very good friends have !   I'm reasonably familiar with the general area.

Never thought iof the tick removers - you'll need that alright ! My OH twists & pulls them off but he's very experienced at it,  I'd definitely get one of those if he wasn't with me as there's much less chance of you leaving any bits of the tick behind.

You're not my OH are you ?  !

I have a whistle permanently on my car keys & one on my rucksack.    Have had all this drilled into me since meeting OH many years back lol.  That's a very helpful link you've posted.

Looking forward to hearing about the trip when you get back  Karen
