Hi Maggie

Ive not stayed on a gravel pitch but if its pea gravel you should be fine with just your footprint for protection. It shouldnt do any damage and actually feels quite good under foot as it moves a little.

Hi Maggie not been to Sandy Balls before but camped on gravel pitches up at centeneryway Filey.

As long as you have a sig and footprint like us should be ok

just remember not to fall to the floor on your knees like I did

we put down some of those rubber mats that we usually put in the extention.....nice and comfy

Billy

Just be careful if you have anything with legs (not human ones!!) - we've stayed on an all weather pitch and where the campbed legs went the footprint and groundsheet had started to wear - someone on here suggested pringles lids or anything similar under the feet to stop this happening.  That was the only issue we had, although I must admit I do like the softer feeling of ground underneath the tent.

I have stayed at Sandy Balls a couple of years ago. They hire out astro turf to put under your tent and I would definitely recommend doing that as it is really hard stoney ground but I can't remember how much this cost but I remember thinking it wasn't too bad. Make sure you have your heaviest duty rock pegs.

Site is nice though if not a little pricey to eat etc. and the pitch's are very uniform in straight lines with bushes in between. Its not an open space type site but it really depends on what you are looking for.

Hope you have a lovely time.

As the others have said make sure you have rock pegs, normal pegs just won't cut it at all..

Hi Maggie.

Sandy Balls is fab you will love it. We just had the footprint under the tent and this wasnt damaged at all. We had the carpet down but i would put an extra blanket on top of this. We didnt, it was ok but you got the odd bobbly bit. The astro stuff sounds a very good idea, we would have hired this if we'd have known about it.

Rock pegs are a must, normal ones wont go in.

Out of the main entrance and 10min up the road the lovely Fighting Cocks pub awaits.

Have a great time. Jill

never had a tent on anything other than grass, but I do like the idea of astroturf.

Why do they have gravel tent pitches? I don't fancy the sound of that at all!

the astro turf was great although we did manage to kick a stone onto it after it had been laid and spent the weekend treading on that one little stone with no shoes on!!

The staff at Sandy Balls even delivered it to the pitch on their little electric buggy and helped us lay it out

The astro turf is a must otherwise it will be very uncomfortable under foot. We hired the astro turf last Easter. Personally we found the site a little over rated - just our opinion.

I've stayed at Sandy Balls and i must say, the hard standing was horrible.  We had a footprint, then the tent, then 2 carpets, yes TWO!  And it felt horrible,  We ended up wearing our crocks inside and we never sat on the floor to play games as we usually do.

We had rock pegs with us as we were pre-warned the ground is hard, even in the surrounding grassy bits.  It is great though, you have your own EHU, TV aeriel socket, fresh water tap and drain which we liked.  Make sure you take a walk down to the river, we saw deer on our walk amonst other 4 legged furry freinds!

Just make sure you take plenty of floor coverings!
