For the disrespectful way he treated and then returned your tent i would disown him. it may not bother him that you want nothing to do with him but your OH may also go down that road too in your defence. Not only has he lost the future use of your tent but hes also lost your respect, friendship and support at a time when he may need it .

I wish you luck in whatever action you choose to take and thank you for giving us all a wake up call as to the dangers of lending out our babies.

Can I just add a little bit to this? (well I'm going to anyway lol)

I remember that Fran wasn't happy about her hubby putting her in the awkward position of lending out her tent in the first place but I think he must be a good man to now stick to what he said and make his son pay for it......some absent parents would bury their head in the sand and try to forget about it....but he hasn't. Maybe he feels guilty for putting Fran in the postion he did in the first place..

Well, I am sorry for your tent and glad your OH is going to sort him out and get you a replacement.

If this boy has so much money maybe he should have just bought his own in the first place.

But as a previous poster said, maybe I do feel a little sorry for him. He is clearly a spoilt brat, and if his mum doesn't start backing off and making him take responsibility for himself, he is just going to waste his adult life and any potential he might have. I feel sorry for him for not having the mother he needs right now.

I've known him all his life (both mum and dad are very old friends) and he is a smashing young man, in many ways. His mother has gone off the rails in many ways since they split up - she's very needy and gives in to his every whim, just blowing up every couple of months, and then giving in again 24 hours later. Unsurprisingly, SS has learned to take advantage of this.

He's also lacked a good example as she has a very lucrative business which involves other people doing almost all the work and her having lots of holidays. He sees his dad wage-slaving (she wound up their business when they split up) for a sum that is paltry by the standards SS is used to and, perhaps understandably, can't see any point in that.

OH and I had hoped he would have grown out of this phase by now, but he seems to be getting worse. OH was opposed to him having the bulk of his trust fund this soon, but he's not a trustee, so had no say in the matter. At the time, mother had a boyfriend that SS hated, and it was a good way of getting SS to move elsewhere.

I suppose I should be crosser really, but I'm not surprised, and am most cross with myself for just not saying no. SS is hopeless with "stuff": when clearing out mum's car the other week, he threw away the locking nut for her alloy wheels - an expensive mistake. She's no better - she's back together with the boyfriend who trashed her house and did £20k's worth of damage to a valuable collection of ceramics. Egbert's right imo.

A similar thing happened when we loaned our 6 person Sunncamp tent out. It came back with a snapped pole, burn marks inside and 2 rips!! We never lend any of our camping gear out anymore and it has lead to us becoming distant with a good friend. They swore they didn't break anything or burn the sig or bedroom wall with cigarettes, but I don't smoke and the wife doesn't smoke anywhere near the tent, never mind inside!!
