I purchased a Halfords roof box including fittings and instructions from a local car boot at £35. I have seen the same design roof box but made by Thule.
If you are going to buy a used roof box, check for cracks in the mouldings, ensure the hingers are not damage and that they work. Keys are an obvious bonus but new locks can be purchased easily and very easy to fit.
If you wish to buy using eBay, I suggest you buy a roof box between October and March. It will work out cheaper, purchase either side of these months and the prices will soar.

My roof box has a number on the lock and you can buy replacement keys.
Make sure it locks well, i have seen a roof box spring open on the motorway and people's holiday stuff scattered to the winds!

does it need to be a roofbox or would you consider one of these..... http://www.handiworld.com/ we have one and it is great, easy to store and bars don't have to stay on the car all the time.
We have one of these too, surprising how much you can fit in, use it for all the soft items bedding, clothes etc. Although the last trip we also put in the cooker and a couple of tables. Easy to fit and solid when fitted and loaded. We opted for this option as we don't really have the space to store a solid roofbox.

Does anyone know about fixing roofboxes to trailers? Have seen a few pics on here and think its a really good idea, just wondered what roofbars were used and how they actually attached to the trailer? I just have a simple wooden lid on my trailer.
just bolt your roofbox on to the wood lid.
