We have just been offered the opportunity to rent a lock up.
As I live in a terraced house building a garage isnt an option, the lockup is only half a street away so very handy. We are planning to use it to store the adult's bikes, infrequently used gardening equipment, and all our camping equipment. However, we were having a little wobble the other day as there is no power supply in the lockups and although they are water tight and look in good condition, are my tent and sleeping bags likely to get damp? In previous years they have always been stored in the loft which benefits from a little heat from the house during the winter months
It is just such a hassle getting all the heavy stuff up and down from the loft, I really like the idea of having it all kept togther in a lock up making packing and unpacking so much quicker. But obviously I don't want to damage my tent!
Does anyone else store their tent/sleeping bags in a garage/lock up that is never heated?
I'd also be nervous about vermin getting in there as, they don't need more than a crack to queeze through. Also, how does the temperature in there vary - extremes of hot and cold can shorten the life of the tent as well as damp, as we've found in the past. But in saying this, many members keep their tents in garages and lofts. You could always keep the fabric parts in the house and the rest in the lock-up, but obviously don't then forget to take it with you camping. A list is good here.
------------- Love our set-up and need no more tents or gear, so trying to stop looking!
We store most of our stuff in the summer house with no heat and had very little problem, the sleeping bags and blankets stay in the house.
Something to bear in mind, hubby's garage at home has a tin roof and gets a lot of condensation, not ideal for storing anything unless it's in sealed crates. Our lock up where he stores one of the old cars has an asbestos roof and it doesn't suffer from the condensation.
I would store everything in the lock up except the sleeping bags and the actual tent. The sleeping bags could maybe go in the back of a cupboard or on top of a wardrobe? The tent can go under a bed. I keep most of my stuff in the shed which is water tight but has no heating but wouldn't dream of putting my sleeping bag out there. I've kept my tent out in the shed over the summer between uses but brought them into the house over winter.

I can testify to asbestos roofs being better than steel for condensation, we used to have a vintage vehicle that suffered badly from condensation in a steel built barn, while had no problem in an asbestos version.

The old steel bodied cars don't like condensation, neither does the chrome work.
how about storing our stuff in those sealable plastic bags which you can hoover the air out of. We've just bought extra large ones to store our trailer tent cabin canvas and awning in. ill then store then in the garage roof space.

Mice will have a field day chewing through those if they find them. They can chew through far more substantial plastic containers...

I must confess to being a little over protective with tents etc. but I only store tents/ sleeping bags indoors. All the other stuff goes into the shed mostly.
I'd be worried all Winter storing the tent etc. outside in a shed/ lockup in case im met with a nasty surprise come the first pitching of the new season!

Planned for next year, hopefully!
Summer Solstice wild camp.
Chilled in a Field, July.
Crantock, August. Fouth year with the fantastic Quechua Base Seconds 4.2!
..... and the odd night wild camping in my Argos 1 man tent...
Indoors. Have slung out some old stuff so I could make room for the two really good tents in cupboards in the house. Other, smaller tents go in the loft and under the stairs. We have a first-time-buyer house, with hardly any cupboard space, so it's a bit of a sacrifice, but I wouldn't like to store my tents in anything but optimum conditions. I can't possibly afford to replace them, so it's worthwhile giving them pride of place.
hmmmm, thanks for starting this thread. I too was wondering where to store our tent.
At the mo its in our garage with the rest of gear, but thinking now maybe to move it into cupboard under the stairs????
We are soon to site a tumble dryer in garage as well so am thinking the heat/condensation that may come from this not ideal if tent stored in same place over winter????
I'd avoid keeping anything that may perish in the extreme cold and damp in your lockup. Tent,Sleeping bags,Rugs etc are a no no. It may be watertight but at least for this year, i'd keep an eye on it over the winter and see how damp it gets or doesnt get.

We store all our stuff, except bedding, in the garage (brick built, flat roof). We have both canvas and polyester tents. We have done this for the past 30+ years and even the 30 year old canvas (sentimentality!) is still OK. The only concession I make is to drape a canvas loosely over the top to keep the dust off. Never had a problem.
I keep most of my tents and camping gear in the garage which is part of the house which probably stops things getting too cold, but I do keep the canvas bell tent indoors, just in case, and the sleeping bags, of course.
i keep all my camping stuff in the garage appart from the tent and sleeping bags maily because i dont want to take a chance with rodents chewing and nibbleing my tent or i have this phobia of opening the tent or getting in the sleeping bag and finding a furry friend errrr
