Hi all,

Complete newbie to forum and camping.

Can anybody recomend Coleman Classic Rechargeable LED Lantern.  I was thinking of getting a electric powered lantern and then saw this on offer in my local camping shop.

Thanks in advance Al

Hi alidfc, and welcome to the forum.

Personally I would not use a rechargeable lantern, better imho to have a couple of sets of rechargeable batteries, for your lantern, that way, you are never left in the dark.

LED lanterns are getting better, those that use 20 regular LED's are a little naff, and don't give of that much light, look out for ones that use Cree LED's they arte uber bright, an give a softer light, they come in either one, two, three or four Cree LED variants, you can reckon about 100 Lumen per Cree LED.

You can get a 400 Lumen Outwell lantern, but at fifty quid is a tad expensive, and still only gives about 30watt of light in old money, as a comparison a single mantle gas lamp gives of 80watt.

Currently the best value Cree LED lantern, is the 300 Lumen version of the Outwell.

Rechargeable batteries always sound good. However they suffer the problems of cold, not being used for months etc. This drastically shortens their life. If somebody starts to use Lithium technology batteries as used smart phones, it would be better. So as Francais said, user changeable batteries are best, you will get best life out of the product.

Yes, don't go for a rechargeable lantern, they are great for about 10 mins then they slowly fade to a dim glow.

We have the Coleman led rechargeable lantern and we think its great, no probs at all with the battery.

It lasted being on all night for 5 nights (on the night light setting) for my 2 Y/O son. The unit is now 2 years old too so either we've been very lucky or others have been unlucky.

For me it's a great, durable and bright lantern...It does what it's supposed to.

Best of luck with your decision.

Mick

I think it depends on what you want the light for.

We use the cheap and cheerful supermarket/ Wilko UFO LED lights and they are fine for just generally seeing round the tent at night. One in each sleeping pod and one or 2 in the living area. They are surprisingly good for the money in my opinion.

If you intend spending lots of time in the tent of an evening you might want something brighter.

However, to supplement the UFO lights I use a headtorch for reading/ emergency tent repairs etc.

Again, I think it depends just how light you want the inside of your tent to be.
