Am starting to doubt my sanity, we are planning to go camping in the October half term with our new Outwell Oakland xl. Any tips or advice? I'm used to my lovely TT but OH wants a tent that goes up quickly (I had to think how to write that cos it sounded bad at first!)
Ah ha, the old quick erection joke. No you are completely sane.
I'm just packing for a two nighter going later today, in preperation for a few nights at the end of October. This will be in the new to me Sunncamp Ranch, into which I am installing my new Frontier Stove.
Advice, plenty of insulation under your sleeping bags. Enjoy
------------- Canvas tent, paraffin light, petrol stove. Heaven
I'd rather be kayaking.
Spent up, not pent up, just had my new tent up.
What is 'insane' (or even unusual) about going camping in a new tent???
The advice most people would offer is to have a test-pitch in your garden (or a park nearby if your garden's too small) before you go on a trip. That way you can check nothing is missing or damaged (even Outwell has lapses in quality control) as well as familiarise yourself with the tent and work out the easiest way to pitch it.
Hi Alison, we have one of the Quechua tents (see link below) for our 'overnighters/short stays' - once you master the art of folding away it's great!! hubby mastered it straight away so very proud of him xx

Just get EHU and a heater and you can camp all year without having to dress up like Michelin Man
Definitely!
Unfortunately due to very unforseen personal and family circumstances my planned camping trips this month have been scuppered, however as soon as I have a free weekend I'll be back out there. I've been thinking about winter camping for some time and as long as I have a pitch with ehu and can use my little fan heater I fully intend to go.

I have a very temperamental personality - 50% temper and 50% mental

I think Alison is asking "are we bonkers for going in October?" . To that, my reply is absolutely not!
We have a weeks holiday from work, starting this Friday. We were becoming obsessed about the weather, what's it going to be like. Almost to the point of deciding not to go away camping. but after a glass of wine ( or two ) on Saturday night, the decision was made to go Camping regardless of any forthcoming weather. So off we go.... bonkers or not...
Just come back from weekend at local site. 30 mins drive.
Weather forcast was bad, rain and cold, and we didnt know what to do. anyway though we'd go and just come home if rained off ( this happened 2 weeks ago )
Friday night it rained and Saturday morning ok. So off we went further up into Northumberland to Bamborough. For anyone who hasnt been, the castle on the beach is awsome, and the sand is practically white. the sun shone and we sat on the beach, lovely and mild, fabulous.
Got back to tent 4pm, and everyone said the hasnt the rain been terrible. Rain what rain!!
The moral of this is just go, and enjoy. Wrap up well and take plenty of warm blankets and insulation for sleeping at this time of the year. A heater is probably a must. we have gas one, we dont do EHU.
Another reason your not bonkers camping "later on" in the season, September to November. You find that lots of sites offer special deals, like 3 nights for 2, no charge for additional persons, etc. Not forgetting the site fees are usually cheaper. As for the cold what's better than snuggling up in tent of an evening..
thanks everyone
I have got EHU that i have with the trailer tent and we use a halogen heater.
I will use some cardboard under the mats, we are using trek mats rather than air beds, the thermalite ones.
Have got 2-3 season sleeping bags but might take my king size duvet to throw over the children if its really cold.
Happy October camping
Alison
